Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing & discharge

New Kit
Hi, I have baby rabbits currently 7 weeks, they have just started to get what seems like yellow discharge around their noses and one of them keeps sneezing, can anyone give any advice, I'm wondering if it is snuffles? Their mom is doing the odd sneeze but no discharge, thank you x

It probably is and if it's yellow it means it's infected so they will need antibiotics.

Doughnut has just had an RTI, no discharge from the nose but the baytril took 8 days to work, so please make sure your vet gives you a long dose of antibiotics, I got a 10 day course. A course of just a few or 5 days doesn't normally clear it up.

Are you using wood shavings as this can irritate a rabbit's respiratory system? There must be something which is upsetting them and making them sneeze.

As the nasal discharge is yellow as opposed to clear and they are all sneezing that is more indicative of a bacterial infection/'snuffles' rather than an allergy. All of the Rabbits need to be examined by a Veterinary Surgeon ASAP, all need to be quarantined well away from any other Rabbits you have and no Kits can be sold (if you are intending to sell them) until they have all been seen by a Vet, completed any treatment prescribed and then re-examined by a Vet to insure they have all recovered.

If you do use wood shavings as bedding then as Tonibun says that could irritate the respiratory tract and exacerbate the symptoms of 'snuffles'.

Hi and welcome to RU

Sorry to hear about your babies. You may be right and it may be snuffles.

It would be best to get them treated straight away, as they will have a better chance of not being stuck with it later on. Can you get the family to a vet?
