Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

tooth grinding or purring

Recently my 3 year old bunny has started making occasional tooth grinding noises when sitting. It seems to be louder than the purring I've heard from my previous rabbits. I got her from someone who couldn't look after her any more and she has sharp teeth which were filed down a couple of weeks ago by a vet, so I'm not convinced she has tooth pain at the moment. Is it possible that her purring is just louder than I'm used to or could she be ill? She is eating normally, seems relaxed and is still very active and friendly.

Is she doing it when she's in a relaxed position for example stretched out? If she's eating and toileting as normal I would say she's fine as I know Doughnut's only ever done the tooth grinding when she's been in a hunched position and not moving so I could tell she was in pain.

Hopefully someone else will come along with more experience of tooth purring/grinding. I get the purring when I kiss her little nose and forehead but it's only a gentle teeth chattering :)

I have only noticed her doing it for a few seconds when sat more squished up and her eyes are half closed so she does look pretty chilled, and then she licks her lips and flops down or hops over for some attention. Maybe I'm worrying too much!

Doughnut sometimes sort of chews on nothing when she's getting comfortable. I think you may be worrying over nothing but better to be aware of your rabbits habits so you will recognise when they are ill. If she's flopping I would say she's fine

I think you're probably worrying a bit too much - we all do :D

Sometimes the chattering can sound a bit louder, as they do actually grind the spurs off their own teeth whilst at rest, as well as tooth purring in delight :)
