Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ongoing eye problems

Hello,

I have two rabbits and have had nothing but eye problems!. Really at a loss to what to do and my vet also seems uncertain on whats next. I wondered if anyone on here has any suggestions? I'll list a brief history,

- Alfie developed a red eye which was mildly weeping. Nothing was in it, no teeth issues and nothing appeared blocked. He was prescribed anti-inflammatory drops and his eye was flushed

-The next day, both rabbits (Harry and Alfie) developed sore eyes. I took them to the emergency out of hours vet. I was informed that it was likely mild Myxomatosis (despite a vaccine). However they would be also treated for conjunctivitis. They had a 10 day prescription of oral antibiotics, they also had eye drops that were antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops.

-There was no improvement, so the amount of anti-biotics was doubled. After ten days both rabbits eyes were clear.

-Then after a few days, Alfie's one eye flared up again. Its bulbous, swollen, red and with a slightly creamy discharge (same eye as before). An alternative antibiotic was prescribed. However after a few days his eye was closed. His other eye seems fine. So he returned to the vet for his tear duct to be flushed. I was informed a large white plug came out. I'm going back on Monday for it to be flushed again.

The vet is not very clear about the diagnosis. She's suggested snuffles, conjunctivitis, virus etc. But has advised he is becoming resistant to antibiotics. He's his usual happy self and other than a hideous eye he seems fine.

Does any one have any suggestions on what else I can try? further treatment options? I'm £600 down in one month, this is just not sustainable long term. He's insured but his illness kicked in before it was live.

thanks!:thumb:

I've read your post a couple of times, and it really does sound most unfortunate! I'm so sorry!

If you are confident in your vet, and he generally knows what he's doing, then I would respect the fact that he's drawn a blank. Some people advocate a vet 'consulting' with a specialist about eye problems without the rabbit ever seeing the specialist. To be honest, whenever (which is very rare) I have had a rabbit with an eye issue, I prefer to see a specialist.

I appreciate you've spent £600, which is an awful lot (I know - I've also spent that amount on one of my rabbits this month!). But if you keep trying alternative treatments without really knowing what's going on or what you're doing, you're going to spend even more on vet bills and treatments without a proper diagnosis in sight.

Seeing a good specialist (and someone on here may be able to recommend one in your area) may well be worth it as you will probably only need to make one visit.

thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm sorry about such a long initial post! Would anyone have recommendations for vets in the Nottingham/midlands?

Please don't be sorry about anything! We are here to help if we can :D

I would start another thread in Rabbit Health, with the subject:

Rabbit Savvy Vet/Eye Specialist in Nottingham/Midlands

It will catch peoples' eye that way and hopefully get you a fast result.

I feel very sorry for your poor bunny's eye ........ Hope something's sorted soon x
