Just saw a flea on Bo!

lenslady

Alpha Buck
I have just saw a flea on Bo, he is white so was really easy to spot, I don't see any other signs of an infestation or any more fleas. I expect they are coming of the cats as i really do have trouble this time of year with them no matter how much i flea them. I use advantage which i get monthly of my vets and they have been done this month already! Hopefully it was just the odd flea but I can't abide themas i am allergic to them and i come out in massive bumps. Do the vets do a rabbit flea treatment or shall i get something from the pet shop? I have used the bob martin mite treatment for rabbits and i think it worked on gypsy because her dandruff cleared up but mites and fleas are different parasites. xx

I wouldn't use anything from a Pet Shop, they are seldom that useful. You can obtain Advantage for Rabbits :

Are all your Rabbits vaccinated ?

Hi, You have to be careful with fleas and rabbits. Some flea treatments will kill buns. The vet would give a treatment that won't harm bunnies. Are your bunnies vaccinated against myxi? If not you really need to get that done. Good luck!

Don't worry, it happens!

In the past I have used Advantage for Rabbits when a foster has come in with fleas  That's what the Rescue Centre always used and recommended. I don't know if you can get it in a Pet Shop - it's probably possible.

I'm sure your rabbits are all vaccinated, aren't they? If not, take them asap, just in case. Do your cats go outside? If so, they may bring rabbit fleas in with them, a common vector for myxi.

Thank you. No they are not as yet. I wasn't sure if they really need doing being indoors and I have heard some rabbits have reactions which i am a bit anxious about, i know that sounds irresponsible but i am not 100% happy having them done. My cats and dogs are vaccinated and chipped. I see where your going with this though in regard to fleas having diseases . Vaccinations are not expensive so that does not bother me, its more the fear of having them done. Is it best to have them done? is their a risk, especially with the little one? xx

For the reasons I've mentioned (cats bringing rabbit fleas in) then I would *definitely* get them all vaccinated.

I only ever don't vaccinate when a rabbit is severely health compromised

, No they are not yet, I'm a bit scared they will get ill. I had a vets appointment today and i cancelled it as Bo is fine. What are the side effects? because if i have the 3 done together will i able to watch the 3 of them at the same time or shall i do them separately? xx

All Rabbits need to be vaccinated. Both Myxomatosis and VHD can be spread via blood sucking insects-eg fleas. IMO vaccination is an absolute essential to do all we can to protect our Rabbits from two deadly diseases. The minimal risk of vaccination is absolutely nothing compared to the risk of Myxomatosis/VHD in an unvaccinated Rabbit

Ok, i will book them in. Is it a combined vaccination or a separate lot? I've seen a lot of posts on here where buns have become ill from the combined one.

This is my vets and they have Rabbit specialists and they have been amazing with my cats and dogs.

Ok thank you. I'l get them booked in for next week and they can also look at Burberry for me in regard to his neuter. Should i be aware of side effects? xx

It is one vaccination per rabbit, combining myxi and VHD. The side effects can be a transient fever and possibly a 'lump' at the injection site which disappears. However, the majority of rabbits have no side effects at all. I really would consider getting them done!

Definitely getting them in for next week, will phone the vets on Monday for an appointment. I should have known about the fleas carrying germs and no matter how much they are house rabbits, fleas are coming in from god knows where. I think they will be ok, it's just the little one i am more worried about but i'l have a word with my vet and see what he says because Bo is still very small for his age. xx

The Vet will health check every Rabbit before the vaccination is given. The Vet will also re-assure you about the microscopic risks of side effects. This is the vaccine data sheet:

I have seen the devastating consequences of a VHD outbreak amongst unvaccinated Rabbits (not mine). It really is utterly horrific. The deaths were all preventable. I would only not vaccinate a Rabbit if he/she was severely health compromised.

Rabbits can be vaccinated from 5 weeks old:

Your life is nothing short of eventful since you got the rabbits, Lenslady

Thank you, I will read that and take it on board. I assume mine are all healthy apart from little ones small size but he has grown and gained nearly a pound in weight since having him so he might be fine.

I know. I would assume the breeder of Gypsy and Bo has had all her Rabbits vaccinated. Gone are the days of ignorant rabbit ownership in years past when my father had them. I am sure they will do fine after the vac's but then it will be the worry of them recovering from neuters . Almost certainly eventful

Also we are thinking of buying and setting up a large 12x6 shed in my front garden, insulating it and attaching a run but it is going to cost me nearly £700 to do this and September i can afford to have this done, so hopefully they can go out in the day and come in at night. I'm doing this because i will be back at uni then and i can't leave them alone all day in a small pen area. xx

Your bunnies are very lucky! This sounds like a splendid idea :D

That will be my student bursery gone  I am very lucky to have all the photographic equipment i need for now so my bursery can go to the Buns

Oh my goodness! Well I hope they don't repay you by eating too much carpet and causing you vet hassle

The shed and run sound a lovely idea but is there any way you could put them in your back garden? Just thinking I would be scared to leave my rabbits out in a run in my front garden.
