  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Massage for gut blockage

Do you have any experience on this? My Wafer is in stasis now, and despite an urgent visit to the vet last night at 8 pm, he looks worse than before.
I'm doing all I can (painkiller, fluids etc) but I wonder if there's anything else I can try. Perhaps belly massage? I tried this morning and he didn't seem to mind it. But how? For how long?
Please help.

You can try belly massage but you must be careful, its very easy to hurt a rabbits internal organs. If you must try it be gentle. I don't think there's a time limit on it, maybe do it every half an hour for a few minutes or something?

When Milo was in stasis, I was encouraged to try and get him hopping around, even now and then I would just give his bum a nudge and he would have a little hope around, that is just as good as belly massage.

It seems to last forever stasis :( it only took less than 24 hours for Milo to start eating but it felt like a lifetime, I hope your Wafer picks up really soon x

Thanks. I did for some 20 minuted before and I think I heard some belly noises, is that a good thing?

A soft grumbling is generally what a rabbits tummy should make (I actually listened to Milo's with a stethoscope, when he was in stasis there was no noise at all, when he began to recover his tummy started to grumble) a loud gurgling you can hear without a stethescope can indicated an excessive amount of gas x

I have no experience of belly massages as my vet (rabbit specialist) doesn't recommend them or chasing around. Was a blockage actually diagnosed? Have you been advised to go back today if no better? If no diagnosis was given there is of course the possibility it isn't primarily a gut problem and that he stopped eating because of pain somewhere.

I hope you see some improvement soon.

He is already back right now. I hope he'll be getting better...

There's no reason to think he won't get better at the moment. It often takes a while to get them on track again. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious and just a bit of wind that needed passing.
