Bunny making squeeky noise when picked up u/d respiratory infection

Poppy has been at the vets from Saturday, her breathing wasnt right, she has a respiratory infection. Also my other rabbit has respiratory infection although his breathing is not affected, he has had an emergency dental also. He is eating on his own and the concern is now Poppy. I know she is in the best place for treatment but I feel sick with worry. A horrible weekend.

Do the squeaks happen as she is breathing ie is the noise coming from her respiratory tract ?

You are doing the best thing by getting the Vet to check her over, I hope all goes well x

She is not squeeking unless picked up. Her breathing seems faster slightly, I thought she was not when outside. She is not mouth breathing. She is breathing through her nose. She is lively as in hopping around but not that interested in food.

I am sure that the Vet will give her a thorough examination including listening to her lungs and heart. There are various things that may cause 'squeaky breathing' but an thorough examination is the only way to ascertain exactly what is going on. It sounds as though Poppy is feeling fine within herself which is a good sign :)

My bunny poppy seems to be making a funny squeeky noise when I pick her up. She is 8 and a half years old. I dont think she is eating quite as much, I have booked vets appointment for later today and I have brought her in. Any thoughts on what could be wrong.

She sounds like she may be getting stressed for some reason ... Perhaps there is something the vet will hear when he sounds her lungs? Get the vet to take her temperature as well :thumb:

hi all

Just to update after vets visit. He did an examination of Poppy, felt all over her for injuries, listened to her heart and chest cavity (all was clear), took her temp (normal), checked her teeth (fine), listened to her gut (ok but not a lot in it). Her weight is ok. He said it could be pain related ie arthritis, but she hops around ok. She is eating veg and treats only, she wont have pellets, even if softened. I have metacam and zantak for her and will take her back Monday to see how she is and poss do blood test, x-ray. I know she isnt herself, she is quieter than normal, moving around not sat hunched.

I hope that the medication will help her to feel more comfortable. Is Poppy spayed ?

She is eating bits of veg, banana, grape, wont eat pellets even softened. She is nibbling bits of hay. She made the funny squeak noise when I put her down on the floor so it makes me think its something inside, she didnt really do it at the vets. Poor girl. Why is it always weekend when buns are ill. She is indoors so I can keep a close eye on her.

Thanks Jane.

If the vet thought she was in pain, he would probably have given her Metacam? Will you be taking her in for diagnostics on Monday? Do you have a good vet?

I'm sorry to hear Poppy isn't herself right now ....

The problem is that when a Bun is at the Vets they are stressed and have an adrenalin rush which can mask symptoms that may be noted in the home environment. It's good that your Vet has prescribed Metacam as analgesic cover but it sounds as though another consultation with the Vet is needed if Poppy is still 'not right'.

The Zantac will help with her gut motility, but it is important to keep a close eye on her output and to encourage her to eat and drink to make sure that her GI tract does not shut down. Please keep us updated as to how Poppy is doing x

Hi

Poppy seems a little better today. She has eaten pellets, some veg, her poo seems a little bigger (it went a bit small), and she is weeing too. I picked her up and put her down a few times and didnt hear the squeak noise today. Yes she has metacam. I have an appointment at the vets tomorrow morning so will update then. I am happy with my vet , although he is new, he suggested blood test and xray. Thanks for your support.

I am glad that Poppy appears to be feeling better and I hope her appointment tomorrow goes well xx

Thank you for the update :thumb:

Good luck for you both at the vets tomorrow! x

Just an update. been to bets he said to keep her on metacam for 10 days as there has been improvement. Then see how she is for the days after and he will re-assess. So no other tests at this stage. She is eating and poo is bigger and weeing, so she is back to normal for the mo.

I would video on your phone picking her up and hopefully getting the noise to show the vets. Doughnut used to make an awful noise like a gagging noise and rub her throat constantly. Obviously she didn't do it when I saw the specialist but he could hear it and watched the video. Just so they know what you are trying to explain!

Pleased she's doing well.

Thank you for this cpayne :D I have to see a specialist with one of my little ones, and I know they hardly ever do the 'serious' stuff in the consultation room! I'll make sure I make a video to show too!
