  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

To vaccinate or not?

My rabbit Lola is due her vaccination in 2 weeks time. Problem is as of January she's been unwell, she has had reoccurring dental issues which have resulted in 2 infections within her jaw.

Initially I was told, after her first xray, it was an abscess. It cleared up within a month or so, so either it was caught quickly or was 'just' an infection. A xray 2 weeks ago showed up a very small pocket of infection, she's on antibiotics for 2 weeks.

Question is should she be vaccinated whilst this is all going on, presumably her immune system will be suppressed?
She's 6 now and I don't know if it's going to be time to call it a day with vaccinating.
Opinions please? :)

I had a very similar case of an abscessed rabbit and whether to vaccinate. My vet was of the opinion that it's too risky - both now and for the foreseeable future. So although he is better from his abscess, I am not vaccinating him.

Fandango, my bun with a chest tumour really struggled after his vac, for a day or two I thought I was losing him, his breathing got much much worse, but then he pulled round and is ok again. I have reported it to the vet. Its a harsh vaccine and a difficult decision, I would not take the risk in a sick bun personally.

I would discuss it with the Vet treating your Rabbit. In general it is only appropriate to vaccinate healthy Rabbits as stated on the vaccine data sheet here under 'Special precautions for use':

Each decision to vaccinate or not vaccinate needs to be made on a case by case basis by the Vet involved in the Rabbit's care :)

I don't know, I think it's more a decision on the owner's part. Even if you're sure you have a really rabbit savvy vet (sometimes people think they do and then realize later on by the vet's actions that they're not) they can still make a decision you're not happy with and I think vaccinating/not vaccinating is a very personal decision. I certainly wouldn't allow a vet to make that decision for me. But then, I have trust issues with vets.

If it were me I wouldn't vaccinate until after the infection clears up since it might not work with her immune system being suppressed. Vaccinations don't last exactly 1 year so she should still be protected in the mean time for a little while, I would think.
