Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Profender / praziquantal for rabbits

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
I was doing some research into worms a while back as last year one of my buns had recurring ones (now cleared) and came across an article where FHB had given and alternative to the usual Panacur.

For future reference I was wondering if anyone on here had ever come across anything similar and used praziquantal before for their rabbit. It is in profender (which is for cats) along with some other ingredient and if so did it work and are there any side affects? Or any alternatives?

Thank you Jane.

I was researching the strange episodes the big fella has been having and if there was any link to worms (but we have not seen any). We are still getting intermittent episodes (3 weeks since last one) that just last maybe an hour after meds.

Has he had any diagnostics ? Sorry, I have lost track of what has been going on for him recently xx

Hi Jane, yes he had x-rays (body and teeth), bloods. Nothing out of the norm. He went about 3 weeks last time without any bouts of not eating. As soon as we give 1ml of metacam and 1ml of zantac he starts to eat within the hour and then bounces around like nothing has been wrong.

My other suspicion is possibly bladder sludge but not tested for that (unless it would have shown on x-rays). Our other suspicion is he was eating laurel leaves so those are part way of being removed so doing it by elimination. We have also cut right back on veg and eliminated any calcium type veg just in case it is sludge.

We have tried the peppermint tea but he was not keen on that ;)

Sludge shows up really clearly on xrays as a rule. Tbh the calcium in veg is minimal. Its the pellets that contain the most calcium.
