  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Concern for Barney after vet app

I've not long got back with Barney from his vet appointment (I noticed a few days ago he has sore hocks). As soon as I got home I put him in his run and he lay down, then changed his position about 5 times as he clearly wasn't comfortable. He's now panting and refusing food, which is so unlike him. The vet did some stretching of his legs because she said he could have arthritis as he's a giant bun, she said his right leg was a little "gratey" and that he could have had a funny fall which is why he's not been as mobile. Anyway, he's been prescribed Loxicom for a couple of weeks and I've got to monitor his activity whilst on pain killers and then without if that makes sense.

Actually, he's just popped in his hay tray for a nibble so that's good. Maybe he was just a bit overwhelmed? I will go offer him a fenugreek crunchie.

Mine are always stressed when we get back from the vet. They strop for a little while and then get over it!

Maybe if the vet manipulated his leg he's a little sore too? (assuming that the painkillers haven't had time to kick in yet).
