Our big disabled boy is not doing so well right now :( in recent days he has started passing increasing amounts of sludge. Yesterday he seemed a bit down and worse today. He is also wetting himself constantly.I spoke to the vet earlier and we agreed to get a sample to take in tomorrow when he has acupuncture. But when getting the sample he started passing very visable blood too :(

Hopefully we can get it sorted fairly easily but its obviously very uncomfortable for him right now.

Sending lots of vibes for Otis. Could it be someting as simple as a urine infection, given that his boy bits are always dragging on the floor and therefore much more prone to infection? Let's hope a course on antibiotics can clear it up.

His man bits don't rub on the floor but yes I am sure he has an infection. At least I hope so. Its the sludge from his immobility that is the real problem so it depends how easy that is to sort.......

Thank you :)

Here is a bit more info - Otis is now on antibiotics and sub cut fluids twice a day. His urine will be checked again next week and if no improvement a sterile sample will be taken and sent to the lab. Also if he still has a major sludge problem he may have his bladder flushed which the vet believes he can do consciously.

The vets like us believes that the sludge has built up for many months when Otis was not moving at all and now we are working hard with him and he is a lot more active the sludge is finally moving which while painful at the moment is a good thing long term for Otis.

Otis also had his second acupuncture session which went much better than the first. He really relaxed and we got a lot more needles in. Sarah saw a video of the spasms Otis had after the last session and says they mean there is good progress, although they aren't particularly nice for Otis. She said there was much more movement in his legs this time round :)

So it seems that for Otis its a case of no pain no gain. Bless him. Thankfully he does seem a little more comfortable and happy in himself today.

We have another physio session Friday and back to see the vet and more acupuncture next Tuesday :)

Oh bless him and you.

I know how challenging it is dealing with a bun with bladder issues and poorly back legs. My Frenchie had nightly baths followed by his dinner at one end on the kitchen worktop whilst I was at the other with the hair dryer! In his own way, I'm sure he appreciated it and knew I was trying to help.

Otis had a great physio session today. I am so happy :) The sun was out so we did the whole thing out in the garden. He is obviously feeling so much better and more comfortable.

This morning he did a lovely stream of clear wee :D Instead of it dribbling out down his legs it came out like a hose! Its amazing how great that was to see.... It also means he hasn't needed a proper bath since yesterday morning which is a relief.

Hopefully we are back on track with things now. Next appointments are Tuesday when his urine will be checked again.

Well caring for Otis certainly is a rollercoaster! He has passed more sludge today and been really wet on occasions. Woohooo great news, it all went brilliant. Just wish I had been there to see it.

Otis's urine was given the all clear and Andrew was very pleased with his general health. I just need to finish off the course of antibiotics but at least I can stop using him as a pin cushion with all the SC fluids he has been having.

Acupuncture also went well. Sarah managed to turn him on to his other side for the first time. This is a much bigger thing than it sounds as Otis has been stuck in one position for many many months so to be able to reposition him on occasion is a real achievement.

Otis was also kicking his legs like crazy. He was flicking needles all over the room. Sarah was amazed at the strength he has built up in them in the few weeks he had been here.

So a brilliant morning for our boy and back for more acupuncture next week.

Seems like Otis was also on the verge of giving out autographs in the waiting room ;)

Is there any chance of X-raying him awake? Or is it an invasive x-Ray?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have asked them to try everything consciously first but the problem is Otis is locked in a certain position. He never lays down and can only sit on one side by himself which is no good for xraying :(

I'm picking up more antibiotics today and have booked him in for xrays next Wednesday. That gives us a chance to have acupuncture Tuesday and talk to Sarah about it. She might have different ideas as to what to do.

Im so sorry to hear, after so much going forwards. But i think thats perhaps the best idea have it booked and talk it over with someone in the meantime.

He had such a good reaction to the acupuncture last week that I think it's worth waiting until next week to see how he goes as long as he's comfortable on the antibiotics. Loads of vibes for Otis.

He is booked in for Wednesday so he can have acupuncture on Tuesday and we can speak to Sarah to see if she agrees with it.

The vet I spoke to is a good vet and I am grateful he is not writing Otis off like many vets would. But I also don't feel he is taking Otis's disability into account. It seems to be his way or no way and he comes across as a bit of an arrogant twonk.......

Sending many vibes to Otis. Jane is right, you really have to balance the risk and benefits of the X-ray. Is the vet expecting to see anything specific on the X-ray? What would the treatment be if the vet saw what is expected? Could the sludge have irritated his urinary tract/bladder so he got the infection and blood in his urine? If he does go under GA for X-ray, would it be beneficial to have his bladder flushed at the same time to eliminate more of the sludge? If he is locked in a certain position, will he be able to be moved into the correct position for an X-ray even if he is under GA? Also, could your boy have particles that are bigger than the usual sludge and smaller than a stone that irritated his tract?

I had a couple disabled bunnies over my years of owning bunnies. Digger had a rear leg that became paralyzed and later became locked straight forward pointing to his shoulder. He stayed that way for the rest of his life. When he became disabled, Digger became a people person. He got a bath at least once a day and he let me trim the fur near his butt. He also developed a LOT of bladder sludge. One day, as I was moving him to the sink for his bath, I pressed his bladder rather by accident and noticed I expressed a lot of gritty sludge with a river of urine into my sink. So I started to very gently express his bladder each day before his bath until the sludge decreased. My one theory is his urine stream was weak due to his disability and the calcium deposits were not being flushed out when he urinated. He also seemed to be better within himself after I cared for him, so I wonder if the sludge was keeping him from completly emptying his bladder.

You are right. We help Otis empty his bladder several times a day and this is always when the sludge comes out. Never when he wees by himself.

The vet wants to check for stones and obviously if he has them will need them removing. But I'm not convinced about it tbh. We think he needs a GA because he won't lay down on his side and he will need turning on to his 'bad' side.

But as I've said if we do anything we will go for any conscious options first in the hopes it might work. But we are also speaking to Sarah first as I'm not convinced about the stone idea.

Would ultrasound be any use to detect stones, that would be easier to do conscious? I'm sure I remember the lovely Richard Saunders saying that if you u/s and see lots of bladder sludge, you can sometimes give it a bit of a knock with the u/s machine thingy to see if it agitates in the bladder or whether it's a solid layer. Hope you can find answers and more importantly a solution for your lovely boy. Does the sludge cause him much discomfort?

Yes we are opting for ultrasound as our first choice :)

He is definitely having pain while urinating at the moment. I am struggling to get more than a few dribbles out of him at the moment and he is constantly damp. When he is well he has a jet the fire brigade would be proud of!

He started his antibiotics yesterday and I am picking up fluids for him this morning. Never got a chance yesterday as was still cleaning out at 9pm. Hopefully once he is on the fluids we can get more sludge out and he will be more comfy again. Although it will be back to the three times a day bath and blow dry.

Its all such a shame as he is kicking his back legs so hard now. My heart breaks for him when he is trying to wee. He has already been through so much pain with it while still fighting his disability.

If any bunny deserves a happy ending its Otis but I'm so scared we are going to get it :(

Sorry I didn't update yesterday as promised, Aimee went into stasis and in the afternoon we went to london to rescue a rabbit and some piggies living in hell.

These are some of the updates from facebook so those of you who don't have fb can catch up :)

This is from Friday after he was collected from the vets -

Otis is eating some veg for himself but not much else. His abdomen is still swollen but more doughy than before and he is passing one or two small poos.
When I got to the vet we then did a conscious ultrasound of his bladder which I was able to watch. Its a really good machine and showed the bladder really clearly. It confirmed there is a lot of sludge swirling about but thankfully no evidence of stones. In one place near the lining of his bladder there was a thick white line. We are not sure if this is sludge or an issue with the actual bladder wall. Think she said a dissected bladder lining but I could be completely wrong! Anyway pictures of the scan have been saved and will be sent to Richard Saunders to get his opinion on what is the best course of action given Otis's disability. At least its done with no GA needed for now and we can cancel Wednesday.
After the scan she expressed his bladder and what came out was just horrific. Loads of sludge and blood. It must have been so painful but will hopefully make him a bit more comfortable in time.
Otis has had a little bit more veg on the bed and a rest. He then desperately needed a bath where he wee'd a lot more blood. He has now been dried, had his meds and is back in his pen to get over today's ordeal.
I have fluids and gut meds for the weekend plus we are increasing his pain relief. If I am still worried in the morning we can go back to the vet for more vetergesic etc. But fingers crossed he will slowly continue to improve.
We have cancelled his physio on Sunday which is a shame as he missed acupuncture too. But no point pushing him when he isn't well.

This was saturday morning -
Unfortunately Otis hasn't eaten or pooped over night. He looks pretty much the same as yesterday morning frown emoticon
The good news is he has done some huge much better wees so it seems the bladder being expressed has unclogged him.
So today the battle is on to get him pooping. He doesn't have full control of weeing so I am wondering if his disability is also affecting his ability to start pooping again. He did poo fine before but I guess it could affect it now there is a problem with his guts.
Fingers firmly crossed we can get his tummy emptying and then he may well be over the worst of this again.

And this is saturday evening -
Otis has improved greatly in the last two hours smile emoticon he is still not eating normally but is eating a lot more than before. He is passing cecotrophes as well as normal poo now and is much brighter in himself. He is wanting to move around more and is having a bit of a strop with me when I want to do stuff to him. He has passed more bloody sludge just before I put him to bed.
He will stay on all his meds for the foreseeable future. But I haven't given him any tramadol yet. He has had his metacam daily dose doubled so while he was starting to eat I didn't want to risk doing anything that might upset that.
If you had seen him yesterday morning or even when I picked him up yesterday from the vets you will know why I honestly believed we would never get to this point. I really didn't think he would recover. But our vets have been brilliant, Otis is a fighter and I can hand on heart say I have never worked so hard looking after a sick bunny.
Hopefully things will keep improving. I can't say he will never have another episode like this and we still need to see what Richard's opinion is on any procedure he may need on his bladder. But for now we can relax a little and enjoy seeing our big man starting to enjoy life again.

This morning he has passed more sludge but he is pooping like a trooper and he is much more like his normal self. Hopefully he will want to move around a bit more today which will help everything. The past two days understandably he hasn;t wanted to move at all.

Hopefully today will be a much better day :)

Otis is lucky to have such a caring person who is willing to take the measures you have taken to get him back to being himself. It is good that he is passing more wee and poo. It is surprising how much sludge disabled bunnies can have in their bladder.
I am sure the pain meds and antibiotics are helping him a lot.
You mentioned he made wee with a lot of sludge this morning. You did not mention any blood in his wee. If he stopped having blood in his wee it is a very good sign.

I am so glad Otis is now making good poos. It is hard to believe he still has that much sludge in his bladder. On the plus side, he is passing all that nasty sludge and the blood seems to be subsiding so that is good.

May I say what a wonderful job you are doing with Otis. From just looking at his photo, he does not look like a disabled bunny. I am sure your love and attention along with his physical therapy have helped him to keep his muscle mass. As a person who has owned a couple disabled bunnies, I know what a commitment it is to take care of disabled bunnies under normal circumstances, and how much more it is for you when he is not himself.

Acupuncture went really well today. He was kicking hard and we managed to get his body really straight and leave sitting that way without us touching him :)

Sarah believes much of his disability is habit rather than ability. When he got sick he taught his body to compensate and found a way to cope. Now we are forcing him to try to do things properly again. But he doesn't see why he should as he has got comfortable doing it his way.

Bit I am very relieved that something has gone well for him at last.

His scan has been sent to Richard so we await his answer. But all things being equal we will start his physio sessions again on Sunday :)

Awe he is such a little trooper, its amazing to see him on the mend . You have done an absolute outstanding job of caring for him and I am confident Otis knows this too. That sludge looks horrific  but thank goodness he is getting it out. It is great to see his pile of healthy poops. I really hope it is on the up for him now. xx

I am glad to hear that Otis is doing much better. It was also nice to hear he is able to move into different positions as the result of all his treatments. Good job-you and Otis.

He certainly does have a team! Three vets plus an acupuncturist and physiotherapist, and now we are dragging Richard Saunders in to it ;)

He passed small amounts of sludge last night and this morning but it was a nice cream colour. This is likely the result of his acupuncture as he had needles put in his bladder area to help with his sludge problems.

I've had a long chat with the vet looking after Otis, Cassia. She has heard back from Richard and its not good news. The white line in the bladder scan is definitely a problem with the bladder lining as we first thought, not sludge as we hoped. Richard has suggested a bladder biopsy but neither of us think its fair to put him through it.

Its something that needs to be managed rather than can be fixed and his disability makes it a whole lot harder. It means his bladder never fully empties as urine gets caught under the lining which is coming away. Infection and sludge will be a constant problem.

There are a number of meds we can use to try to help the situation. He will also remain on septrin and fluids long term along with high level pain relief.

He is going back to see cassia Monday to have his bladder expressed again and we are so grateful at how amazing she is being with Otis.

Thankfully Otis is oblivious to all of this and continues to enjoy his life. Hopefully if the vet and I get it right he will continue to do so. Anyone who knows us will know we would never let him suffer or push him to hard x

Oh Otis!!

Any idea as to whether increased movement and acupuncture may help him empty his own bladder better?

I expect it will to a point. But if the lining isn't fixable he will always get urine trapped behind it which leaves him at a high risk for sludge and infection :(

Oh no so sorry to hear this. Glad that Otis is oblivious though, really hope that a good combo of meds can keep him happy and comfortable for a long long time xx

Aww...poor Otis :( Since I live with a chronic sludge bunny, I can understand the worry. How very troubling for him and for you. :(
But I know that whatever happens you and his vets always have his best interests at heart and he will be a happy bunny for as long as you are able to give him such a life. He's so lucky to be with you. xxxxxxx

Yesterday's news was a bit of a slap in the face. I must confess I'm finding these past few weeks very draining. But Otis is fine and happy which is the most important thing :)

Hopefully Otis's big, cuddly face does make it all worthwhile. I know it's demanding looking after him but he really is doing so well. I hope his bladder issues can stay under control for both of you. :)

It does :)

But this week I have gone through, thank god he's alive, to wow he's getting better, to being frustrated he's not improving more and more problems keep happening, followed by feeling like I'm drowning.

Its hard work looking after a sludge/ urine infection bunny and hard work looking after a disabled bunny. Add them together and add a pinch of giant. Along with 27 other rabbits many with problems and that's my life right now!!

Good job he is so loveable :)

You are an angel to bunnies. It is hard when you, Otis, and your entire team are putting so much effort into Otis's recovery and you get news that is not what you expected.
At least you have a diagnosis and have developed a treatment plan to manage his bladder sludge/infections. I suspect he will have fewer bad days once his sludge/infections are under control. Having his bladder expressed will probably help a lot.

Otis must be a real sweetheart for you to love him so much and he is lucky to have you to give him so much care.

The fact that you question yourself shows me you have Otis's best interest in mind when you make your decisions. As a person who has owned bunnies with disabilities, I know what is is like to want to keep trying as long as the bunny wants to try, even if the goal is to help your pet feel comfortable and loved. Only you and Otis can decide when it is time to stop treatments.

Thank you.

You are right saying keep trying as long as bunny wants to try. However much I love him I would never push him for longer than HE wants to fight. What I want doesn't come into it, its all about Otis what he wants and what is best for him :)

We have so many professionals working with Otis and not one has suggested not treating him or even implied we should consider pts. All have said there is hope for him :)

We have a physio session this morning. His first in two weeks as he was too poorly last week.

At the moment I don't feel anything. I have been so excited for him in the past for things to then take a downward spiral that I am too apprehensive to be excited at the moment.

I am also really nervous about the new medications he is starting today just in case it upsets him in any way. I think I will be much happier once he has had a few days of meds with no adverse reactions and his bladder has been expressed again on Monday and I know whether or not the vet is happy with what comes out. If thats all good then just maybe I can allow myself to be happy at the rest of his progress :)

At last I can allow myself to be happy :)

Otis did great at the vets this morning. No sludge at all came out when he had his bladder expressed. Hopefully that means it has finally gone :) He is having it expressed again next Monday just to be certain.

He has taken his new meds for two days and touch wood no sign of any side effects.

As it seems to be working we will continue with everything we are doing for the foreseeable future.

Cassia the vet things his future is really bright. I can't tell you what a relief that was to hear.

We are back for acupuncture tomorrow.

Thought those following would like the latest update :D

Otis has been back to the vets to see Cassia this morning. The intention was to have his bladder expressed but he wee'd so well first thing this morning there was nothing to express. This is really good as it means he is completely emptying his bladder each time now which is what we want smile emoticon So Otis is remaining on his meds long term as they are working and he is not showing any side effects. He will stay on the antibiotics for at least two more weeks which will be a month in total. We are going to drop his SC fluids to once a day and see how he gets on.

He has put on more weight. When his infection was at its worse he was 5.25 He is now 5.62 which is more than when he arrived here. It would be good to think some of that is muscle mass.

So now Otis only needs to see Cassia every three months for a medication check up smile emoticon He was so pleased he gave her a cuddle and a wash!
Hopefully its onwards and upwards now we are on top of his bladder issues. He is always dry between being toileted. His skin is good and fur is growing back either where matt's have been removed or skin was sore. Happy days :D
