  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Frasier male neutered rabbit

Male rabbit Frasier 4yrs old been perfectly healthy since we rescued him 2yrs ago. He loves curly kale and when we noticed his urine going orange we removed the curly kale from his diet and urine returned back to normal. Recently he had a uti and had blood in his urine and went off his food, took him to vets who gave us medicine and he returned back to normal sort of. On occasion now he seems to have urine incontinance so his urine is normal colour but he seems to be going little and often rather than fully emptying his bladder , also when you pick him up cuddle and put him down he seems worried that he may leak urine?? We have just finished the antibiotics prescribed by vets so going to give it a few days see if it settled as otherwise he is fine in himself. Eating normally, any advice??

Has he been xrayed for bladder or urethra stones as these can cause 'dribbling' urine and UTIs?

I would advise you to go back to the Vet to discuss the possibility of your Rabbit having 'Bladder Sludge' or stones. Both can present with the symptoms you are seeing in your Rabbit

Or it may be that your Rabbit's course of antibiotics was not long enough to fully eradicate the infection. Bladder infections can require a long course of treatment as the bacteria can be located deep within the bladder wall.

Welcome to the Forum Rosie

I would agree with Mackers. The best way to determine if there's a problem with the bladder in terms of sludge or stones is to have an X-ray. Sometimes the urine expressed (by the vet) from a rabbit's bladder can show evidence of sludge, but not always.

An X-Ray of the abdomen can be done consciously if your vet is confident, so it doesn't need to include sedation.
