Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam

New Kit
Hello everyone

I'm hoping someone will be able to confirm the dose of Metacam for my rabbit.I've lost the box which had the dose written on it.

My rabbit is 6 years old and weighs 2.5 kg. He had an op yesterday for tooth spurs . At today's check up our vet said to give him Metacam for the next few days.

He last had it last year for GI stasis and I think the dose was 6 drops (of 0.5mg/ml strength).Does that sound right to those of you who have used Metacan? I no longer have the Metacam syringe. Just want to be sure he's getting enough.

Thanks very much.

Karen

I would check with the vet.

In part, it will depend upon whether you have "cat" or "dog" metacam.

Vets have differing opinions on how much Metacam to give - it varies a great deal, and also whether once or twice daily. If your vet's recommended it, give the vet/vet nurse a ring to confirm the dosage x

Wow that does sound low. Doughnut is 1.3kg and the maximum dose she's had is 0.5ml 3 times a day of the dog strength, that's from a specialist. I would definitely call your vet just to check.

Thanks very much everyone :)

Got the vet on the phone and my memory must have deteriorated in a year! He suggests giving my bunny 1ml of the cat strength and repeating this in 12 hours if needed. I'm almost sure that wasn't the dose last time. Anyway just glad he's going to get adequate pain relief.

Thanks again :thumb:

I have been putting mine in a bit of banana - much less stressful for Smokie (she thinks she hasn't had drugs for 2 days), just to share!
