Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Glaucoma....

My bunny was diagnosed with glaucoma in January. I had initially been taking her to the vet for funny breathing since octoberish but the vets could never hear it/she never done it in the vets, when we were leaving I noticed her left eye was bulging so asked him to check this. He thought it was a tumour behind her eye and recommend a fna to be taken to check for a tumour? Then removal after a talk with my oh we decided to scan her eye to check if there was a mass present, the vet did an ultrasound scan and X-ray and there was nothing found. The vet advised to start penicillin injections again and continue her usual mess for her leg (metacam tram afoul and gabapentin) there was no improvement and I returned to the vets to see there vet with an interest in eyes. After examining her eye she checked her iop which was 49.8 ! They gave her a steroid injection to help with inflammation and prescribed azopt eye drops and said they would speak to an eye specialist to see if there was anything else they could do. The eye specialist and my vet both do not recommended removal of the eye due to peppers age and other health issues. Today I've came home and her eye looks much worse than usual. Can an eye burst due to glaucoma? Am I been unkind to her ? I just don't know what to do for the best :(

Sorry for such the long post !

Has your rabbit actually seen an ophthalmologist? Or did your (very savvy vet) speak to the specialist about it?

I know people on RU are happy to go with vets who have 'consulted' with specialists but for myself (having done it both ways) there is no substitute for actually seeing a good specialist. I have found them to be worth their weight in gold. Only then will you be reassured, from the horse's mouth (as it were) that your bunny is not in discomfort.

Although I have experience of a few types of eye problems, I am really loathe to give advice on such a delicate issue when I haven't seen the problem and I'm not a vet.

Hope you don't mind my honest expression of my opinions :D

Nope, really appreciate your honest opinion :)

We haven't seen the eye specialist. Basically due to funds, I know it sounds terrible 😐 but I can not afford it, we already spend approx £300pm just on vets bills & we are in the middle of purchasing a house so my funds are quite limited, pepper is not insured and as they eye specialist was saying the same as our vet (she's not a specialist but is very interested in eyes) I didn't really see the point as he was recommending the same eye drops and wouldn't want to remove the eye due to age/other health issues.

we seen our own vet today as peppers eye looked terrible last night. Her pressure is back up at 49.8 and she now has a prolapsed lens 😧 the vet says the only option left is to remove the eye and my oh does not want to do this as he feels it's to much for her 😞

No it doesn't sound terrible at all! There are very few of us can keep paying out for vets bills - especially at the rates vets charge

I have to cut a lot of corners to make ends meet. I have to say though, I did think paying to see an eye specialist was money well spent - it cost about twice the amount a vet visit did, and meant I didn't have to pay my vet consults when she wasn't sure what was going on really ....

I'm sorry you have such wild outgoings with your vets bills. I couldn't afford £300 per month  That must be draining.

I hope you come to a conclusion that suits you and your bunny - you obviously love Pepper a lot

Our Widget had glaucoma. She was prescribed xalatan which kept it under control. However the drops are expensive- over £50 per bottle which lasted about 6 weeks. I hope you are able to help Pepper.

These are the drops pepper was prescribed, although the bottle only last 2 weeks 😧 so it's quite costly.

I just don't know what to do for the best, she's still her usual monster self lol. So wouldn't want to do anything to make it worse :(
