Health Check - What to look for?

Lemonade

Hi all,

Booking my trio in for a health check at the Vets - other than when I first got them all, they haven't had one under my watch and certainly not all three at the same time. Just wondering what I should make sure the Vet Nurse checks. Just been out to them and noticed that Fiver looks like he's had a wet mouth - no where else but think I need to get him double checked in case he's got dental problems. It's not wet anymore and he goes for food like its the only food he's ever seen whenever I put anything in so don't think he's having problems eating - going to keep a close eye on him until their appt. Also going to up their hay even more and lessen their pellets to try and help.

Thanks,

L x

They should check their heart, weight, feel body all over, check ears, check nails, teeth and bums too.

Hi Lemonade,

health checks for my buns include their vaccinations & a chat about lifestyle & diet. The vet looks in their ears, at their teeth, eyes, rear end, feels their tummy, listens to their heart.
Obviously they can't see their molars that well. I hope Fiver is ok. When bunnys have dental issues eating hay can be impossible, maybe best to ensure he isn't reliant on just hay til after he's had his check up & then make changes. Does he drink from a bowl? I'm hoping he'd just had a big drink before you went out to him hence the wet fur that is now dry.

Thanks for the replies.

Right, all three booked in for Tuesday afternoon - absolutely no idea how I'm going to get them all there - Toffee and Fiver will be fine but getting Socks into anywhere other than her hutch or run is like getting blood out of a stone  Sure I'll be fine...

Definitely won't let him just rely on hay but haven't noticed any problems with him eating it at all - a few days ago I added a bowl of water into their run so they have a choice of bottles in the hutch or bowl of water in the run so it may be that - the thought had crossed my mind. Just want to make sure though. He seems okay in himself but I know buns are very good at hiding things that they don't want people to notice.

I was watching one of my buns drinking from a bowl this evening, and her chin got quite wet, I was really surprised. (they usually just have a bottle, but I noticed this bun really likes a bowl) Hope it is the same cause for your Fiver.

I gave him a piece of carrot this evening, something I knew he'd go straight for - he ate it with no problems but I did notice all round his mouth/chin went orange!
It's like he's super salivary? Is that normal?

Not usually, it can be a sign of Dental problems so you are wise to get him checked over by your Vet :)

I wouldn't worry about it until the vet has checked him over. It could be he was really enjoying that juicy carrot!

Although the vet can't really see the molars 100%, they check the incisors and what they can see of the 'cheek teeth' and assess if they think there will be a problem which needs further investigation.

Good luck at the vets xx
