Insuring an ec bunny

Can you insure a bunny with ec? Bertie has a cateract and ruptured lense due to ec, no other symptoms. I was wondering whether to insure him. Will any insurer accept him? I know he won't be covered for ec related problems but he should be for others shouldn't he?

I never insured ruby, she is now 6 so can't be insured :( after losing reggie and having to pay out for x rays and the possibility of having to send him to a specialist (which I didn't in the end as he went downhill very fast and had to be pts) it's something I keep thinking about.

Usually, you can still insure them but just not for any conditions they already have. I have recently insured Flo with petplan, she had been to the vets back in September for conjunctivitis. They said they wouldn't cover any eye related problems until after 1 year of no symptoms occuring (unfortunately she had more since). So I assume Bertie would be covered for anything apart from anything EC related. You can always phone insurance companies for advice.

I would insure still, I think it helps reduce stress when our beloved pets are unwell - don't have to worry about the money. We never insured Bo our previous rabbit, it cost ~£500 when he was ill and unfortunately PTS. We were happy to pay of course, but I think insurance would have been a good idea on reflection.

I would definitely speak with the company. EC is such a complex condition and it can have recurring episodes with different symptoms depending on what organs become effected. For example I'd want to make sure they would not use EC as an excuse not to pay out for a Kidney condition (in some cases EC can effect the Kidneys)

Thanks for the replies. Jane, that's what I am worried about, saying that anything he gets is linked to ec and then not paying out after I have paid out loads myself in insurance! At the moment it seems only in his eye and no other symptoms from it at all and he has had his course of lapizole.

I'm probably best ringing round the insurance companies.

Good idea. Hopefully you'll find the right policy for you :thumb:
