Wise Old Thumper
A friend recently took in some harvest mice from a lady who had missexed them. She was given a cage with 1 male adult, 3 adult females (1 pregnant, one who had a 2 day old litter and one thankfully not pregnant, known as prego, mama and fatso) a 2 day old litter of 5 and a 20 day old litter of 4. 13 mice! Mama mouse was pregnant again and is due to pop today, prego had a litter of 5 babies a week ok bringing the numbers to 18 plus the litter about to be born  the saying should be breed like harvest mice not breed like rabbits

In the older litter there were 2 males so they went into a cage with their dad and have moved in with me, they're utterly adorable! I need some names but I can't tell the 2 younger ones apart  Daddy mouse has a very short tail so he's easy to spot. Any suggestions?

Oh arent they pretty? My syrian hamster was called Harvest (x). How about Oat, Timothy and Rye? What are they housed in? Can you handle them? Ooo they are sweet.

I like those names :) they're in a critters choice cage, its something like 40cm long, 30cm wide and 35cm tall and it's absolutely perfect for 3 or 4 of these guys as they're so small! You can to some extent, I'm leaving them alone at the moment but they interact with me, the only problem is they are seriously quick so if you do hold them it's easy to lose them as they go up your arm and jump off

Aww, harvest mice are lovely. Saw on in the wild once, got a shock that it even gave me the chance to see it! Good luck!

Thats what I was thinking. They look rather like skinny girbils.

they're MUCH quicker than a gerbil :) life expectancy in captivity can be up to 4 years however these guys are probably quite inbred so I won't know for sure. In the wild 6 months is average age but can get to around 18 months

They're pretty wee things . If you want some nice fur to line their nest, I've got LOADS. You should see the state of Imogen (full-on moult time ). I swear if I brush any more out she'll be bald but it just keeps coming and she never looks any smarter .

ohh I bet they'd like that :) I think I actually have some fur left from last time I groomed her lol, I saved it for the birds and never put it out! I actually did manage to give her a bald spot once bless her, it just kept coming out!

I can't stop watching them, they're fantastic :) mums scared of mice and rats (the tails remind her of snakes which she's afraid of too) but she finally got the guts up yesterday to have a look at them and thinks they're cute! She got right up to the glass and everything :)
