Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spay and no uterus ??

Lea-Anne

Pip went to be neutered today. The rescue has messaged me saying the vet did a slightly different op as her uterus was not developed properly so they have not removed it just the ovaries. It would have been too invasive to try and remove.
Anyone else had this? Does it mean she was too young to be spayed? The rescue said she was four months when we got her and she weighed 1.2kg. They said as long as she made 1.5 they would do her. I've had her about a month and she has just hit 1.5. I wonder if they got her age wrong or should she have been developed by now?
She was found skinny, dumped in a box outside a pdsa, with three others. Looked like an accidental litter but no sign of a mum.
Can I still bond her with my male and will she still be at risk of cancer ? :-(

It does sound as though she may be younger than you thought. She may still retain some hormonal behaviour and AFAIK there would still be the risk of uterine cancer in later life. Although I dont know if this risk would be somewhat reduced due to the fact the ovaries have been removed. I think UC is in part related to oestrogen levels and I assume these would be lower without ovaries :?

Hope she makes a speedy recovery from her op' xx

Hi Jane

Thanks for replying, was hoping you'd see this.
Just spoke to my husband who asked about the cancer risk ( he's well bunny educated ha!) and the vet said risk is minimal due to the ovaries being removed, hormones removed so you are right.
Vet seems to think she was malnourished as a youngster. The other female is yet to get done so will be intersting to know if she is deformed to. The two males were done wthout problems.
