Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Possible mites and causes?

Hi, looking for some advice. Found this bald patch on my bunny's neck earlier...its burried under his fur, so not obvious! I think it might be fur mites. But am concerned what has caused it. He was at the vet's a couple of weeks ago as he stopped eating (vet thought he might have slight spur on tooth )but he soon bounced back and been eating and pooping normally. He had a bout of mites post xmas , just after an excess calcium problem. I know mites can be a problem when their immune system is low. Could he have got mites from the vets or his hay? Any recomendations on treatment? Think it'll be another trip to the vets-just feels a bit relentless at the mo! Any help or advice greatly appreciated!

Mites are spread via hay mostly so it is probably this. Two of my buns had mites recently after I opened some new hay. It is usually recommended to have injections from the vet or spot ons (e.g. Xeno 450).

When he was at the vet's a couple of weeks ago, is it possible he may have had injections of baytril, painkiller or other stuff? Sometimes the injections cause a little bald spot where the needle went in.

If you can see the dandruff stuff, however, then it's most likely mites. There's a school of thought that Cheyletiella parasites live on healthy rabbits but don't produce any problems unless the immune system is compromised. This could be when he stopped eating a couple of weeks ago.

I don't usually use the spot on treatments, but prefer to go for the three injections two weeks apart from my vet. I find it works better. How did you treat the mites he had after Xmas?

I am currently dealing with a similar situation and read the same thing about the mites only causing an issue when the immune system is low. Boy bunny had a respiratory infection about a month ago and two weeks ago I noticed a bald patch with the flaky skin near, suspected mites. Have treated with Xeno 450 and will give the subsequent doses as recommended to treat to both bunnies.

Hard to see if there's white flakes or spots as he won't stay still. He did have a few jabs but not sure the point where they injected. Thought it might be due to low immune system. Last time he had the spot on treatment. Interesting what you say about the boosting stuff-i like the sound of that!x

Perhaps you could boost his immune system (of course if your vet is happy) and also give a week or so to see whether the bald spot clears up. If it's an injection site it should do so in that time.

Then if you still feel it's mites you can consider what treatment you want to think about

Thanks for your advice, just wondering how often you administer the Echinacea and how? Also what other natural immune boosters do you recommend?

I personally use an echinacea tincture with alcohol, and heat away the alcohol. The one I recommended to you though is a herbal one but I don't find it keeps as long so best to use it before it goes off.

I use a fair selection of other immune system boosters so that they work on all different levels. Some of them include Astragalus and also Goldenseal to give together with the Echinacea. I also use a lot of homeopathy, which is recommended to me by a qualified specialist.
