  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit acting strange

So I've just got a new rabbit she's only like 13 weeks old or so and we've had her for about a month now. She's usually really giddy when we get her out of her cage and ahe runs round the room and does binkys and comes to us and sniffs at us. But today she's just been sat in the corner of her cage not moving. We got her out and she just ran to her cardboard box and sat in the corner of it. Tried cuddling her and then put her down again and she just chose a corner to sit in. Then instead of just pottering round the room like she usually does, she started creeping round really slow dragging her feet like she didn't know where she was and she went over to her bed corner and acted like shed never seen it before just creeping up to it acting scared of it. She's eating still and pooing and weeing but apart from that I can only say she's just being weird and quiet! Dunno what's going on 😥

She's probably ill and in pain. Please take her to a vet now, not in the morning. This is one of the most important signs rabbits give us that they are ill, and they can go downhill and die very quickly.

Ok so it's like 2 hours later and she's just started bolting round the room running and jumping and playing and just having these massive bursts of energy!

Something must have scared her - perhaps a noise or new scent - maybe the scent of a dog or cat she is not used to.

Its a good idea to have a great rabbit knowledgeable vet (many are not good with rabbits) all lined up for when she is ready to be spayed (at about 6 months old) and of course for her vaccinations if she has not had them yet.

That way you also have a vet ready for if she does get ill.

Are you thinking of getting her a friend? That will also help a LOT because being on their own can be scary - they live n groups in the wild and use each other for support.
