Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Socks after surgery?!

Bunny is being neutered today and the vet suggested using a sock rather than a cone...has anyone done this before?! Can anyone advise on type of sock and how to get it on bunny? Pictures would help!

Hello

I have had over 120 Rabbits spayed/castrated and only 1 required any form of dressing over the surgical wound. With appropriate suturing/surgical glueing techniques and good analgesic cover a cone or a 'sock' is really not needed. I think putting a 'body sock' on a Rabbit is likely to increase the chances of them worrying at the wound, they will just chew the sock and then start to investigate what is underneath it.

Thank you for your reply! I did think surely he would be more likely to investigate if he was wearing a sock

I am sure that he would want to see if his 'crown jewels' were hiding under it !!

I have never had a Buck who needed any type of dressing/cone after a castration. The Rabbit I mentioned in my previous post was a Doe and a spay is a much more invasive procedure than a castration. But even then it really is unusual for a Doe to need a dressing on the wound.

The other issue with a sock is cutting off his circulation .. if too tight it would do that, if too loose he may get tangled up in it
