Are we ready?!

MB1201

Young Bun
Since Autumn we have researched into rabbits and hopefully will be able to adopt in Spring:D - just need to convince dad as the rest of us are ready, Mum seems to have a soft spot for anything she's sees for adoption so hopefully she'll give in lol:lol: me and sis have saved up our Christmas and Birthday cash and have it in hand to buy everything and Mum says if we do get rabbits, she'll pay for vet bills and food etc. if we pay initial costs. Basically I just want to list what we will get and the space we have available. you guys to say if it is suitable as these are our first buns :) we haven't bought anything yet but this is what we have expenses for:

6x2 hutch with an 8x6 run infront, the run can be used with the hutch or by itself. In the litter tray we will have Back2Nature bedding with some shredded paper and hay on top. Along the floor of the hutch we will have aubiose and then straw in the sleeping compartment. We will be using the base of a Zoozone 2 cage as a litter tray out in the run, as we plan to have a metal cube letterbox attatched to the side so they can reach up and get meadow hay - in the hutch will be a normal sized cat one with hay as well. A water dish in the hutch ( ceramic) and then a bottle attatched to the run. We also will be getting Tunnels/Chews/balls/ play objects for the rabbits as well.

We Also will be getting a large puppy playpen for the animals to come inside for some bonding time with us or so they can stay in for the night during very bad weather.

The hutch and run will be on patio during the night and then when we are around to supervise the run will be put on the grass by the window during the afternoons. The rabbits will also get 1-2 hours in good weather free ranging the garden once we have blocked off any nooks and crannies with old puppy pen panels.

As for diet we are planning on having medium sized rabbits, so would 1-2 tablespoons per rabbit of pellets be ok first thing in the morning, and then a dish of vegetables 4 times a week in the evening? We will be feeding science selective pellets. Hay will be refilled into the litter tray and racks daily.

We plan to have a look in our local pet shop adoption section for the first rabbit, as we would like a younger one. The store offers free neutering voucher for rabbits when they are of a suitable age . We would then get this rabbit spayed/neutered and then take him/her up to our local rescue to find a friend :)

Just wanted to check that we have things Sussed before going ahead and getting rabbits as we know very knowledgable owners are on here :thumb:

It sounds like you have done a lot of research :thumb: I would not recommend bringing a bunny indoors and then taking it outdoors again during winter/cold weather as rapid changes in temperature can be bad for them. I would recommend getting a ready bonded pair from a rescue as:-
they will already be vaccinated and neutered/spayed which will save you a lot of money.
you know that they will get on together if they are already bonded, which is not always the case with bunnies, even siblings from the same litter might not get on.
You will have a much better idea of their temperament - if you buy as a baby, when they grow up their personalities can change.
You might find you fall in love with a rabbit based on their temperament, rather than looks.
They don't stay babies for long.
There is a website where you can find your local rescues http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk

What zoobec said!

And to add in that rescues often have baby bunnies in, there are lots of accidental litters! It would be worth trying a few local rescues first.

So even during storm/fireworks or torrential rain should we leave the buns outside? We'd only really be able to bond with them properly indoors as the hutch+run will take up most of the patio. Our spare room leading to the garden has no radiator and is pretty much the same temperature as outside- would this be more ideal?
