  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

need help weepy eye

Hi Sharry  One thing that it could be is that your bun may have a blocked teat duct. My rabbit has had this and the symptoms you describe are very similar to what she had. Is there any way at all you can get to a vet? Your bun would need to be checked and, if it is a blocked tear duct, to have treatment. It won't get better on its own. In the meantime, if he lets you, put a compress under his eye (dip a cotton pad into boiled and then cooled water) and gently massage it under his eye to clean the fur and remove some of the gunk from his tear duct.

Alternatively, something may have gotten into his eye. Do you use wood shavings or sawdust at all for litter?

Good luck, really hope your bun's eye gets better :)

Need help weepy eye

Our buck rabbit Jackson was spayed April first . He has now developed conjunctivitis in his left eye.I was advised to bathe it with warm salt water and take him to the vet after Bank Holiday. The eye is closed and looking sore & swollen he will not let us pick him up and because they are quite delicate and he h, we filled a small spray bottle with warm salt water and sprayed 3 x every hour from 10.00am this morning. The water has cleared the eyes.We changed the bedding from Barley hay to wadding and B Hay. He is eating , drinking and dooing. We will be going to the Vet tomorrow morning.
