Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Eye ulcer and septrin

Can anyone think of a reason why septrin would help with healing a stubborn eye ulcer?

Timmy bunny has an eye ulcer again. He had them in the past and tried everything. My vet got in touch with their eye specialist and D1ck vet for advice, all which was followed. Timmy developed a mild respiratory infection, possibly from Honey, and was prescribed Septrin. After months and months of treatment with no progress, Timmy's eye got better. He stopped the septrin because his respiratory problem got better, and the eye got bad again. Back on the septrin and the eye got better.

I'm really wondering if it is worth him going back on the septrin, because now he has another eye ulcer. Drops again haven't had any effect in helping. He is currently on 1.1ml of metacam twice a day, and is 3kg. I'm not happy with him being on this dose for so long, but if I bring it down, he is obviously in pain.

I will be taking Timmy back to the vet who has been treating his eyes to discuss it with him, but wondered if there was any condition that would cause eye ulcers and that would require septrin.

Septrin is a very good antibiotic and is one that penetrates infected tissues better than some others. It can enter not only abscessed tissue but can penetrate the blood brain barrier and treat infections in the eye.

If the ulcer is caused by a bacterial infection, then Septrin would certainly work on that ...

Thank you both for replying :).

I really think we need to go back to using the septrin again. I'm not happy with him being on such a high dose of metacam long term. He used to be on 0.4-0.6 ml twice a day. Now I can't get lower than 1 ml. He has had antibiotic drops and they don't help. In fact, some of the drops just seem to irritate his eyes so I'm not happy trying loads of different ones on him in case they do permanent damage. I know septrin isn't ideal either, especially since it would be for a couple of months at least, but it might be worth a try.

I have had Rabbits who have been on Septrin for several weeks, so whilst not an ideal scenario in some cases it is a risk worth taking. But as the drug can impact on renal function I would want to discuss this in detail with the Vet. I am sure the D1ck Rabbit Clinic Vets will give good advice about that.

The preservatives used in eye drops can cause problems for some Rabbits, so maybe Timmy is particularly sensitive to the preservatives.

It's a difficult call because both Septrin and Metcam can be hard on the kidneys over time. I'm sure you're getting best advice from your vet.

With Septrin it's also important that he drink lots of water to reduce the risk of the medicine forming crystals in the urine.

I agree that it's often the preservatives that are more of an issue. The great thing about the hyabak I've previously mentioned is that it is preservative free, it's literally just diluted hyaluronate which is a substance naturally produced by the body anyway. I hope you can get him more comfy x x

One of mine reacted really badly to the preservative in the Lacrilube that was used during a GA. Something given to try to protect the eyes ended up irritating them !!

I sometimes think that because Timmy has had so many different drops to try, he has become sensitive to them. He can't use some that he was ok with a couple of years ago. The viscotears is about the only thing that he can tolerate just now, another reason why I thought the septrin might be an idea to try again.

I'm hoping the vet agrees to the hyabak drops because I have read a bit about them and they sound really good.
