  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi everyone, new to this forum but often read your posts so i hope you can help.

Last year my bunny Thumper (approx now 5) started to drag his back leg slightly and was very wobbly. The vet assumed ec so suggested 9 days of panacur (after reading online i realised this was too short so extended it to 28 days). He seemed to improve and when he started dragging his legs again i did a 9 day course.
Since then he has had on and off days with dragging his leg but it is now at the stage where he drags it everyday and its so upsetting to watch him struggle when he tries to be so active.
I am currently halfway through a 28 day course of panacur again and it doesn't appear to be doing anything except stressing him out (the 2nd day of treatment he was almost normal and binkying around the garden but within 2 days he was dragging again).
Are there other treatments that might help instead of panacur as he is starting to get sores on his leg where he drags it and i dont know what to do to help prevent them? Pts is not an option as he is still so full of life, he loves his food, treats, lazing in the garden and his gf

Hello

Have you consulted a Vet again recently ? This is pretty essential as whilst EC is one possible cause of hind leg weakness there are other possible causes too. So obtaining a precise diagnosis is important. Also, your Rabbit may need some additional medication such as a non steroidal anti-inflammatory eg Metacam. Inflammation (due to EC) and/or pain (from a 'structural' /skeletal problem) will not be addressed by just giving Panacur.

If your Rabbit now has sore hocks then this needs Veterinary attention too. If there is any evidence of infection then antibiotics would be required too. So my advice would be to take your Rabbit to a Bunny Savvy Vet for a full examination and relevant diagnostics

Good luck

Jacks jane has summed it up but from your description one of the best thing you can do for your rabbit is put a new post on here asking for recommendations for a rabbit savvy vet in your area. Rabbit needs more diagnostics and should also have been given other meds with the panacur.

agree that a mare rabbit savvy vet should be sought. as well as posting on here you can contact the RWAF about rabbit specialists in your area :)

Thanks. He was given an anti-inflammatory when i first took him to the vets but that had no effect but the panacur seemed to work after a couple weeks hence its appears ec is most likely.
Oh RWAF, thats a good idea thanks! I'll try today to see if i can get an appointment with a different vet tomorrow, mine doesn't seem very helpful, its just horrible watching him drag when hes normally so active.

Sorry, only just seen this. Glad you are going to see a new vet. Also that the Panacur seems to be making an improvement.
Good luck xx
