How long will his pain relief last?

Rosie-Lil

Alpha Buck
My Rabbit went in for Neutering today and to have a dental. He has come around well and when I just questioned the nurse on the phone she said he wont come home with pain relief. I've obviously asked why and she said he has had some as well as a powerful one injected into his muscle? He only ended up going to this vets as we had an emergency on Sunday when he wouldn't eat because it turns out he had a spur and it has cut into his tongue. They aren't terrible with Rabbits however I know of a better one that is only 20 miles away, she couldn't do surgery this week so we chose to get him the treatment sooner rather than later and go from there. I really hope we did the right thing, my guts have been turning all day. I do trust the vets however I'm really not happy with this, I don't want my boy refusing to eat again because he is in pain!

How long will the pain relief they have described last? I will ask for more, don't worry, but they are trying to fob me off with the 'see how he goes line'. I just want to know my stuff so I can talk it out with them.

Needless to say I wont be using them again for him. It's a shame my other vets weren't there in an emergency.

Thanks x

The injection after surgery normally lasts 24 hours. I would certainly get more, enough for 3 days at least. The poor mite has had an op and pain relief is a must!

Well after neutering my boy was given pain relief that would cover him for 24 hours, but similar to you I wasn't happy.. So asked for more, they still stuck to their guns and wouldn't give me any to take home, so I took him back and they have him another injection for another 24 hours!

Hopefully others on here will have much more great advice for you! Hope your bunny is okay xxx

I thought as much. I will try and talk it out with them. Is it silly to think of going to the better vets and having them perscribe some? They are exotic specialists however I'm not sure if they would do this considering they didn't do the surgery?

I feel like a terrible mum now, he means the world to me and I just wanted to get him the treatment. I don't think he would have managed another week with his teeth.:oops:

How long analgesia lasts depends on exactly what drug was given.

I would not be happy to accept no 'take home' pain relief if the Rabbit has an ulcerated tongue. No analgesia given today will last longer than 24 hours and an ulcerated tongue will be painful for more than a day.

ETA- No, you cannot request medication from a different Vet in these circumstances.

Thank you! I have been reading threads on here and think I read another post of your own stating this. I have told them he wont eat if he is in pain, as he has shown. I will try my hardest for them and keep taking him back if I have to.

You could print these off and waive it under the Vet's nose if he/she states that ongoing pain relief is not necessary
