  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Claw clipping

You can do it yourself if you feel able or maybe ask the vet to do it the first time and show you how

how often will depend on how quickly they grow

The vet does my three; I wouldn't feel confident enough and they all hate being picked up, so I'd rather let them hate the vet and associate me with treats :D They probably get theirs trimmed every 6 months or so? Mine are outdoor bunnies though.

Weeble gave you good advice to tell you to have the vet show you how to cut the rabbit's nails.
You will need a sharp pet nail clipper so you cut the nail cleanly, without leaving ragged edges. You will also need very good lighting to see the vein in the bunny's nail which you do not want to clip or pinch. My black bunny has very dark nails so it is hard to see the vein in her nail even with good lighting, so I sometimes had it done at the vets. The vets would clip them a little shorter than I did, but I was being cautious. The hardest nail to clip is the dew claw (thumb nail) since it is not as easy to access. The size of your bun and how well your bun behaves will determine if you can do it yourself. Clipping the nails of some bunnies can be a two person job.

Yes, very dependent upon the bunny whether you can do it yourself! I can manage three of mine with someone else helping but Harribun has to go to the vet as he absolutely refuses to let us do it at home and fights like a little demon to escape

That brings back memory of one of my bunnies. She was less than 1 kg yet he could really squirm. With her small size and tiny bone structure I could not hold her very tight and she knew it!
