Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mushy/sludgy poo—advice needed please!

Hi everyone,

One of my buns (I suspect Illy, but it's hard to tell as they're a trio) has been having mushy, smelly poos recently, and I'm at a loss as to what might be causing it.

They all LOVE hay and constantly eat it, are on the same pellets (burgess excel) and the same amount, and have the same greens every morning and again, same amount.

Nothing has changed, but in the last couple of weeks, mounds of smelly poo keep appearing. They're not cetotrophs, and the best way to describe them would be to say they're like normal poops, but sludgier and less golden. The smell isn't pleasant.

I've tried not giving greens/giving less greens/less pellets etc and it hasn't seemed to have much impact.

Any advice or thoughts please? All are fine in themselves, though I need to take them to the vet this week to get their nails trimmed—obviously I will ask then but as this will be a new vet to us, I would appreciate your input. I am worried this might be a signal of a greater issue.

Just another thought to add on in case it's relevant... It could be coincidence but in the last few weeks somebun has been peeing over the side of the litter tray, and it's very dark gold/amber in colour. I don't know what colour their pee normally is to be honest though.
