  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cancer??

New Kit
So a bit of background on my rabbit, She is 7 years old and not spayed.
Just last week she had surgery to get a lump on her cheek removed, the vet had the lump sent out to get examined because the doctor told me its not an abscess, and had some concerns. So shes been great with her medicine, she is acting normal and eating fine.
Just today this afternoon i get a phone call back from my vet saying they got the results and it looks like its cancer, i forgot what type of cancer it was but i remember her saying its rare and there isnt much information on it yet. But they said they could give her more check ups and maybe more medication to help out, but if shes acting normal for now, it doesnt seem to affect her yet.

I come home a few hours later, and i picked her up to bring her to the kitchen to get her some vegies to treat her and i put her down and she stumbles and falls over while jumping like one side of her has gone numb. I helped her stay steady and eventually she was back to normal, this happens a few times throughout the day. The whole surgery and check ups last week costed us $1200 in total, and i dont know how much i can afford for the check ups.

What is the best thing i should do? Go along with the vets suggestion or just see how things go for her?

I am sorry to hear about your Rabbit's diagnosis. Personally I would discuss with the Vet the possible options of what to do now. At some stage it may be necessary to make some difficult decisions regarding how much more treatment your Rabbit can cope with and how much you can afford. It is better to have some idea of a plan of action before it is actually needed, ie whilst your Rabbit is still 'well within herself' rather than when/if she were to become alot more unwell.. As long as she is not in pain and is happy then as far as she is concerned all is well, she does not know she has cancer. But should she develop more problems and/or start to have pain then obviously something needs to be done. Depending on a myriad of circumstances that may mean more treatment or ensuring that she has a dignified and pain free passing.

So really we cannot advise you as to exactly what to do, there can be no 'one size fits all' in these situations. Your Vet should help guide you toward a decision that you feel is right for your Rabbit. In the meantime I hope your Rabbit remains as well as possible for as long as possible xx

How close was the growth to her inner ear? Could her balance issues be inner ear inflamation or infection from surgery?

I've just lost my third to cancer so I feel your pain.

Personally I might see if it's an ear infection causing the balance issues

Hugs, been through this the last few months. It's hard, and there is no right or wrong answer. We took the decision to not subject Archie to more treatment and to enjoy our time. We had 8 amazing weeks and helped him to the bridge when he took a turn for the worse. I wanted to make sure he didn't struggle on unnecessarily. I am sure you will do the best for your bunny, and be at peace that it is the right choice for you both.

Thank you, I have been considering the idea of just spending time with her and when the time comes or is right to euthanize her. Because she hated the car rides and the loud noises of the streets, and she was scared to be around people for a bit after she returned home for the vet, i dont want to subject her to that again.

Poor bunny. What a difficult situation for you, I hope you manage to come to a decision that feels right for you and her.
