Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Limp front paw

Bertie-

New Kit
Hi all, our 4.5 year old house rabbit has recently stopped putting weight on one if his front legs. We think he has sprained it as he will still jump up onto the sofa for no reason but I have just checked on them (confined to their small room to reduce his mobility) and I'm thinking that he's putting less weight on it than previously.

He has still got his appetite and seems himself, dashing across when he hears treats, but I'm just a little concerned that he won't put his leg down at all. I have seen him use the paw to wash his face, and give the paw itself a good lick, which suggests it isn't broken - does anyone have any experience of this?

Any advice? We can easily get him to the vets, but we are also aware of the stress (to him) and cost (to us) that will cause. To complicate matters, we're expecting our first baby any day now!

Hello - welcome to RU!

How long has your rabbit been limping for? I personally would take him to the vets, especially if you think it's even worse than before.

A day or so - we suspect he has bashed it running up the stairs. There is no blood and we can't feel anything in it.

Without an examination it is not really possible to give a definitive diagnosis. It could be a strain, it could be a hairline fracture, it could be neurological. For peace of mind I would get him examined by a Vet. Sounds as though he may benefit from a non steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic at the very least

Good luck at the Vets and with the imminent arrival of your Baby :) Hopefully both events wont occur simultaneously

If it seems to be getting worse, or affecting his behaviour in any way other than limping, please take him to see a vet. If it's a sprain (and he's jumping on sofas so hopefully not broken) then it should settle down in a day or so ...

Hi
If I were you I'd pop him down to get checked over and put your mind at ease, hopefully not too serious and he gets well soon.
Good luck with your due arrival, hope it all goes well. I was exactly the same a year ago waiting to pop!

Also check his claws, one of mine started limping once and it was because one of his claws (the thumb) had grown long and curled in so it was stabbing him in the foot!
