Still a bit worried about Rolo - update post 57

Roly Poly

Warren Veteran
Rolo's still not quite himself :(

He ate all his nuggets yesterday but it took all day and I had to hand feed them to him.

He's eaten a few other bits by himself and is still moving around as normal, plenty of poops!

This morning, he's completely ignored his nuggets but has eaten a bit of dried dandelion and plantain. He also ate a fenucreek crunchie last night, a small piece of banana and he gnawed on a little alfalfa bale.

Not sure what to do - any thoughts? xxx

What are his poos like ? What comes out is just as important as what is going in

Is he still receiving regular gut motility stimulants (usually metoclopramide and Zantac (Ranitidine). Gut motility meds often need to be given at regular intervals for a few days, not just a one off dose.

What about pain relief ? Always an essential in an anorexic Rabbit ?

As previously mentioned good hydration is another essential. So fluid therapy (both subcutaneous/IV and oral) can bring about a huge improvement.

Personally I would want the Vet to take another look at him. Given that he is a 'Dental Rabbit' I would still want to consider the possibility of this being tooth pain/tooth root pain related.

Sending more vibes for him xx

Thanks Jane, he only had the one injection on Monday evening.

I'm pretty sure he's not dehydrated, I've seen him drink and his litter tray is wet - I've been changing it regularly to monitor what he's doing and his poops are like they always are.

I'm going to ring the vets once they open xx

Sounds as though pain may be involved in some way. Even if he has no actual spurring of his molars if they are too long this will increase pressure on the roots and this can cause pain. In such circumstances Rabbits often stop eating hard food as doing so is more painful than eating forage/hay etc. Pain also causes the GI tract to slow down.

Hope the Vets can see him this morning, good luck xx

I have an appointment this evening - struggling for time during the day as hubby is in work and the microwave repair man is due anytime to return my hopefully fixed microwave and I have a meeting at my daughter's school at 4:10 for her annual review.

On the plus side, he has eaten a few nuggets and he was as mad as ever when I was trying to clean his pen out just now - he attacks the brush, the binbag, anything in sight!

Just a quick update on Rolo - he's been eating a bit today but only if I hand feed him, he's had the odd nibble by himself but nothing like usual.

Anyway had an evening vet appointment but I'm quite disheartened as I had to go to one of their other surgeries as I couldn't get an appointment at mine. The vets usually work at all the different practices but I had never seen this one before and to be honest, I didn't like her. I'm pretty sure she wasn't rabbit savvy and she didn't seem to be very personable.

She did check him over, gave him some pain relief and sent me away with metacam and fibreplex. She said that if he doesn't pick up, they would want to scan him.

He's seems very quiet since we came back but she did say that the pain relief could cause this. I'm going to give him a dose of the fibreplex later and will encourage him to eat in the meantime.

I'm so worried about tomorrow, me and hubby are both working and there is absolutely no way either of us can take any time off. My mum is going to call round to check on him and hubby will be finishing at 2:30.

Continued vibes for my precious boy would be much appreciated.

Thanks all xx

Ah poor little Rolo. I have to say that I've never noticed that metacam has made Doughnut quiet and she has at times been on a high dose three times a day. In fact it's the opposite because it relieves her pain she is then more lively! Maybe others have had different experiences with it but I can only go on her reaction.

What dosage have you been given him and is it twice a day?

She said it wasn't metacam - it was an injection so I didn't see what it was - she said I could give him a dose of metacam as well before bed. I hope this is ok, like I said, I didn't really have a lot of faith in her.

Sounds like he was given a jab of metroclopramide to get his gut going. Doughnut is on this daily and I've forgotten how the jab used to effect her but I think it goes straight into the blood stream and so acts quicker and I think the dose is more from what I remember with all my questions to my specialist!

I'm sure another dose would be fine. It's better to have it at 12 hour intervals as I understand it as it lasts just over 12 hours, so one big dose is great at the beginning but when it's 20 hours that has worn off and the rabbit is in pain. 12 hours keeps the pain relief going. At least he should be pain free tonight but sounds like it may be his teeth. I know when Doughnut isn't interested in food or when she was on pellets and she didn't want them, I knew there was something wrong!

Good luck anyway. Hope the find the source of his discomfort quickly.

Thank you xx

I don't even know if he is in pain to be honest - other than not eating by himself, he's acting like normal.

He was his usual mischievious self this morning when I was cleaning him out - attacking the brush and trying to get in the bin bag with the old hay!

I don't really know about teeth but maybe he's ok until he tries to eat then it hurts. After his next medicine tonight he may start on the nuggets again.

Doughnut likes me sweeping up. She jumps invidious dust pan then eats the old hay in it like i don't feed her.
