  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of a bunny with a tumour inside their ear - my Blossom is a rescue bun approx 6 yrs old and has been suffering from a very smelly ear. Two lots of canaural didn't cure it so at vets this morning, my vet looked deep inside where there is a mass and lots of foul smelling pus. He suspects this could be a tumour. She has had a dexafort injection and is on a higher dose of baytril till i take her back on monday

I have no experience but hope that the vets appointment goes well on Monday and that the relevant treatment can be started xx

I would think an ear abscess is far more likely than a tumour. Ear abscesses are very common especially in Lops. Given your Rabbit's history of a 'smelly ear' and the presence of pus infection really does seem likely. I am surprised the Vet gave dexafort as this is a corticosteroid. This can have a very negative impact on a Rabbit's immune system, not ideal if there is an infection/abscess present :? I guess the Vet must have had very good reason to think a tumour was more likely going on what he/she could see/feel on examination :?

If you are not sure how 'Rabbit savvy' your Vet is maybe you could ask for a referral to a specialist. Often treating an ear abscess involves surgery, so having a Rabbit savvy Vet is important

Good luck xx
