  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this scab anything to worry about?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums (and to owning rabbits!) so I'm hopefully being overly paranoid about something completely trivial, but this evening I've noticed some dry skin/scab in between Mr Bojangles shoulder blades.

Here's a picture, it's not great quality but hopefully you can make it out!

Mr Bojangles

Do you think this something I should be concerned about? I've googled it and found a bit about skin conditions/mites etc but none of the pictures I found really match up with what he has?

That looks like mites to me, I'd pop him to the vet and they will get you some drops for him, they are pretty easy to treat!

Thanks guys :) We've made an appointment to take him to the vets tonight to get it sorted. It can't be bothering him too much because he's still running around like a maniac :)

Hi again!

Thanks for the well wishes... So we took him to the vet who ruled out anything as a result of his injections because he had them a few months ago now. She took some of his hair and a bit of the scabbing to examine and called back on Friday to say she was pretty sure it's not mites. She'd already said at the appointment that she was doubtful of mites anyway because there's only one little patch affected. She's going to check for ringworm next and I'm waiting for a call back on Monday.

Mr Bojangles is still fine in himself so I'm not too worried yet :)

Hope you soon receive an answer to the mystery !! I am glad that Mr B remains fine within himself xx
