Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

HELP! Rabbit medicating

Pixcess

New Kit
My male rabbit was castrated 3 days ago, we took him for a check up today and he's managed to pull out his stitches and has an infection. So we have to give him antibiotics with a syringe and bathe his wound in salt water. Needless to say he's not really over keen on taking the syringe and at the moment we're having to hold him very tightly and shove it in his mouth, as for the bathing it's much the same, hold tight and try to avoid the claws. Does anyone have any suggestions for doing this that would be less traumatic for my rabbit because I don't want to stress him out anymore than is necessary. Much appriated we're very worried.

Is the medication Baytril? If so it's liver flavoured hence why he doesn't like it!

I've had success mixing it with mashed banana or soaking it into bread before.

Also is he receiving pain relief?

That would be pretty essential

No he's not on pain relief but to be fair he doesn't seem to be in much pain he's hopping about like nobody's business and still trying not hump my leg. But the medication is Enrofloxacin. Also he is continuously licking his wound and I'm not sure if rabbit saliver is a good or a bad thing. But I'll certainly try the mashed banana trick, he loves banana.

I guess he didn't get any pain relief after the neuter either then? That may explain why he was irritated by the stitches and pulled them out. I would strongly suggest he has some pain relief ASAP! Rabbits don't tend to show pain overtly until they cannot bear it anymore, their instincts are to hide any weakness. His licking the wound would suggest to me that it is at the very least uncomfortable for him.

I agree, he needs some pain relief, my vets give it as standard after my boy had his op. It will make him feel more comfortable, which should hopefully stop him messing with his wound.
As for giving him his meds, I squeezed mine into the top of broccoli as trying to syringe into his mouth was impossible!
Hope your boy feels better soon.

Definitely agree that you need to demand some pain relief. Even if he wasn't in pain already, salt water is extremely painful on wounds!
