So for the last week I have been keeping a secret. We have adopted a cat and her name is Matilda. She is 9 months old and came from a rescue called Cats Aid in Dublin. The reason I haven't told RU is because I feared I would be judged. As most of you know, in October I rehomed my two bunnies to Tash and Michele who are on the forum.
There were several reasons for this which I am going to explain so that hopefully people will understand my reason for getting a cat. Firstly let me start by saying this was not our plan, to rehome our rabbits in order to get a cat. I just wanted to make that clear from the start.
My reason for rehoming the rabbits was because of the stress I was feeling being a rabbit owner and the fact that they were very high maintenance from both an emotional and physical standpoint. I had MANY vet visits in my last two years of rabbit ownership and my vet was one hour away. I have chronic back pain so these two hour car journeys were becoming increasingly difficult. The other reason was that we haven't been able to take a holiday in almost 4 years as there was no one I could trust to look after the buns due to their delicate nature and the fact there are no good rabbit boarding facilities in Dublin. Unfortunately, having such a high maintenance pet was no longer working for us. But almost two months on I am very happy with my decision and with the wonderful homes that they found.
Deep down we knew we wouldn't be a pet free home forever and a week on from rehoming Rosie and Freddie, we got news that our son has ASD ( aspergers syndrome). I have been doing lots of research on autism and one of the things that stood out is how children with autism can benefit from having a pet that they can interact with. So both myself and my husband thought it would be a good idea to adopt a cat as a family pet. The bunnies were very much MY pet and I did ALL their care but we agreed that if we were to take on a cat that it would be a family effort and the tasks would be divided up and my son could have the job of playing with her, hubby can feed and I can do litter box  Hehe ....yes I got the most fun task of all !!!! Before approaching the rescue I did a lot of research on catteries and have found an amazing one that is just ten mins away plus we have a cat vet called "just cats" that is literally two mins in the car and only treat cats. I could walk there if i wanted.
So thats it really, we made the decisions to adopt a cat .... I hope RU can understand that this wasn't our plan when rehoming the bunnies. But it just feels right and is far less taxing on me physically. I'm not doing half as much bending and I have even set up her feeding station at a height that is comfortable for me to get to when I am feeding her. Sorry I know I have probably gone way overboard with my explanation. I am just a little anxious about how this is going to be received. I couldn't keep it to myself anymore and I love sharing things with my RU family.
Pictures to follow. I am going to send them from my phone in a minute xx
