  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sven is a little messy near his tale (hopefully you know the area i'm talking about)
what should i do to clean that area?

Im going to follow this too if you dont mind. My french lop has gotten a bit messy and matted since she's been outside.

It is not normal for Rabbits to get a messy rear end so aswell as cleaning him up you need to try to ascertain why it is happening in the first place.

Is it urine staining or uneaten cecotrophs getting matted to his fur ?

Cleaning him up will involve carefully clipping off all the soiled fur. You may well need help to do this as it is all too easy to tear the delicate skin and that can then cause additional problems. So I would suggest you ask your Vet for help, initially at least. The Vet can also help you find the primary cause for the fact that your Rabbit is not keeping himself clean

The possible reasons are numerous, if it's urine scalding then it could be a UTI, bladder sludge, arthritic pain amongst other things. If it is uneaten cecotrophs this may be due to a poor diet (too much carbohydrate/protein and not enough fibre), dental problems, arthritic pain, obesity, stress, housed in a very small cage/hutch etc....etc

Treating both the cause and the symptoms is always the best option, good luck.

I think ill book Bella in for a check up when I go with Woody next. I don't fancy trying to snip the matted bits off. Its not poo matted its just fur. She does have a bit of staining on the bum so ill get it checked out.
