Pet Plan renewal-£100 excess plus 20%!!

Bunny Buddy

Wise Old Thumper
*sigh* Not funny. Erin's renewal is now £182 a year with £100 excess + 20%... the 20% was the bit that shocked me. ... 10% maybe but not 20%... really not sure if it's worth the bother of insuring now. The bill has to be over £300 before it's been worth insuring, then the excess is per condition. With 20% extra they are only paying 80% of the bill so what's the flipping point???

Soooo disheartened. The letter says this applies because she's over 7, so in the next few months Esme and Tink also turn 7 *sigh*. Yet, Rudy is already 7 and his insurance is £147 with £80 excess and no % payment. Baffling.

I really would recommend Pets at Home insurance to anyone with younger rabbits. They've paid out so well without messing about. Dinky is also 7 and her premium is £90 (half PP premium) with £75 + £10 excess.

Pet Plan are also being worse than useless with a claim of Esme's as they took off the excess for a second stasis episode and despite me getting a letter from the vets over 5 weeks ago to say both episodes were the same condition they are still messing about as it "might take up to 2 weeks to process"... five weeks now and clock ticking

*sighs again*.

It's not like you could insure her elsewhere either, as no companies will do over 5's!

What a dilemma. I'm dreading Alfie getting older (I know he's only 3, but still!) as we've claimed thousands for him and I worry they'll start to put the cost up as he gets older.

That is very high - there is a point when you have to consider whether it is worth it :( 20% on top of £100 excess - that's shocking!

I actually recommend HelpuCover - they have been more than brilliant with Skye's many bills over the last year and her excess is only £45, and £6 per month. Will be interesting to see what her renewal is though as she turned 5 in the year and has very nearly maxed out her policy this year, so they may hike it up .

I've just spoken to them about why Rudy is less and not 20% extra and it turns out he turned 7 10 days after renewal so that's why he's not yet reached that status.

I shouldn't moan really, Elijah has cost them about £3600 in the last four years and only cost me about £600 in premiums.

The thing is, people get insurance partly to try and mitigate having to pay out thousands on treatment but also so they don't have to fork out hundreds in one go. Putting higher and higher excesses and %'s of the total bill means your bill could very easily creep into the hundreds immediately, therefore partially negating the whole point of insurance (the cashflow element and literally not having the money to pay upfront)

That's why I stopped paying out for insurance for my dogs. They're both over 8 years old and the restrictions and costs were prohibitive. I have a savings account and an empty credit card for any massive bills in the several-thousands.

Similar reason for I don't have insurance for Lopsy: I can afford it straight out, and he's a healthy 18m old who'd never been to the vets until he was well over a year (no, I don't know why prev. owners didn't, either!). I take the risk that bad things might happen but he's an apparently healthy bun with no previous history, so I reckon we'll make 5 with no problems ::fingers crossed::

Insurance is a pain in the backside, whatever it's for! Our buildings insurance is skewed because we live next to a canal: this canal can't flood! Sometimes I think it's all a bit of a swiz.

Yes, they have done the same with me with Paddy cat. I am now on £205 a year premium, plus £105 excess and 20% on top of that. I have had cheaper annual premium quotes but that is without disclosing his existing conditions which I assume will not be covered. All the quotes came in with a smaller excess figure but they all had a percentage as well, mainly 15%. I wonder if this is because of Paddy's age, as far as Petplan go he is now 10, but as he was a stray he could in fact be older.

We have claimed on him this year and with the percentage excess added in we would have just been marginally better off. We have claimed in two of the four years he has been insured for and therefore it works out that Petplan have paid out more than we have paid in - but less than £200. On balance then we are continuing with Petplan, but with gritted teeth.

they where such a help what with sox and his illnesses , but I dread mabels excess each year as it goes up despite not claiming at the moment hers is 75, will let you know in jan if that has increased again

Willows is still £75... Hasnt increased but premium has gone up £2 pm

Just insured Bramble and his excess is also £75

Eight weeks have now passed.... 10 days ago they told me that the claims department had had the information for 10 days so it would be resolved most likely, within the next 24 hours... EIGHT WEEKS they've had the evidence to correct THEIR MISTAKE, it should take no more than 10 days according to their own information.

I rang on Monday, waiting on the line for over 5 minutes and gave up. Wrote a lengthy email which wouldn't send because it objected to some of the characters in it ??? There were no characters other than letters, commas and full stops!!! So, so annoyed. I've tried ringing again and there's a 6 minute wait - what, so I can just be fobbed off again?? So, so frustrated with this. I want my £100 back.:cry::cry:

It's all a bit of a con really. Someone should make a complaint and then take it to the ombudsmen.

I agree. I have cancelled my PetPlan for the rabbits - to pay 20% of the vet bill on top of the excess seemed to make it not worthwhile. I think I've only claimed about £250 in 5 years. They didn't even acknowledge my letter cancelling the insurance. I have one of my cats insured but think I'll be cancelling that when it comes up for renewal next year. I've set up a regular savings account to at least help with any future vet bills.

They told me it's in the policy booklet but I swear it wasn't when I made my decision to insure - which is of course when I needed the information about the 20% because you can't swap about like car and house insurance. I specifically asked 2 years ago when I swapped Rudy from Pets at Home insurance to Pet Plan (thinking it was a good move financially) if there would be a percentage to pay at any point and I was told not... all verbal though so I can't prove it. So I moved from £75 excess with 10% to what will be £100 excess plus 20%. Furious.

Ron's insurance is £202.60 and £100 XS and 20% (which you have to pay every time you go back, even if its for the same condition)
When I called to complain and tell them it was ridiculous, I have never claimed for him, and how come cats are cheaper when they roam the streets, they said " IT WAS MY POSTCODE", i said that is a load of rubbish as Margo lives in the same 'postcode' and she is £10 per month.
I was thinking of swapping Margo to exotic pets, but thought it was a lot of messing around.
But the next bunny I get will NOT be using Pet Plan.
I darent cancel Ron's insurance, I cancelled my last bunsters insurance and 2 days later she developed head tilt and had to have lots of other operations for other problems.:censored:

I'm in the same boat, I have 4 bunnies around the age of 7 insured with them and I just know if I cancel there will be a big bill straight after. Tink managed to get her stasis episode in before renewal and the 20%... I hope she stays well now. At least she's had the full MOT so I could make my decision based on her recent blood tests and x-rays etc!

I have a bun, Mr Bubble with a £100 excess, plus 20%, and my dog Lucky has a £125 excess plus 20%. Both of which have been insured with PetPlan since they were babies. I had hoped insurance would mean that I didn't have to worry about vet bills.

I have used Lucky's a lot, but daren't cancel any of the insurance covers. Bailey has always been a healthy boy, and never a day of being unwell, until he stopped eating a few weeks ago. Bill so far is about £1500 , which is a sum I could never afford.

To date, PetPlan have always been quick at paying out for me. Even when they charged me 2 excesses for the same condition, a letter from my vet to clarify things and they paid out promptly. Guess I've been lucky.

One thing I think they need to change, is the £2000 limit for rabbits. It doesn't cover much if you need specialist care for them.

said I would update when mabels came through, last year for her I was paying £11.90per month and now its come though for this year and its gone up to £12.74 a month, this month being £12.84, excess to pay for any treatment stayed same at £75, I have not made any claims sine she was before a year old, she turned 4years old in October

I'm so glad I didn't go with PetPlan in the end

Got four of my bunnies insured with helpucover, £7.81 a month each with just a £50 excess.

with it sneaking up this year and she is only 4 now, I am dreading seeing what they will do when she hits 5, I can't fault them with all the treatment sox had, but mabels is just creeping up, maybe they thought I wouldn''t notice
