Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

enlarged kidney

I put on this forum recently about my rabbit Penelope having a wet bum and an enlarged kidney. The vet had put her on Baytril. I returned to the vets on Sunday and she is now off the antibiotics but still has an enlarged kidney. I have to collect a urine sample to drop off but this is proving difficult! The vet also weighed her and I have to go back in 2 weeks. She is eating and drinking fine, but I am worried she is looking a little frail (maybe this is just her age as she is 8 years old). Wondering whether to bring her indoors just on the nights with winter setting in - worried she hasn't got as much meat on her bones to keep her warm. Would anyone agree? Also, wondered how dangerous having an enlarged kidney is for a rabbit? Can they live with this condition?
Thank you for any comments

Sorry I have no clue about the enlarged kidney but if it was my rabbit and she is on her own and you can bring her in at nights I would be inclined to do that. You can maybe keep a better eye on her and syringe up some urine if you catch her passing water too? Hopefully others might have better advice for you.

I agree that she needs to be indoors, but she cant be in at night and out in the day as daytime temperatures are getting lower and lower now. So she really needs to be a house Rabbit

Calcification of the kidneys can occur in older Rabbits. Eventually this can result in chronic renal failure. There is some information here :

Thank you for this. I would happily bring her indoors but my only concern is exercise. She has a lot of freedom & space outside where as in doors I will have to keep her in a cage as I have a dog. Is it definitely not a good idea to let her exercise outside?
