  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bleeding eye.

Poppy has runny eyes because of her very few teeth and over active tear ducts. She had them flushed nearly 2 weeks ago and is going for another next week, but the one that's always worse flushed some blood and this morning I've been wiping her eye for what seems like ages because it's bleeding again.

It's the exposed skin where she has been scratching and it looks like she's caught herself. It doesn't seem to be bothering her, like now she is fast asleep. When we had given her her medicine she hopped down and started scratching and cleaning herself as usual.

It just looks horrible.. And I'm trying not to freak out :( Do you think it will stop?

Do you mean the skin around her eye is bleeding or is the blood coming from the actual duct ?

If the bleeding is continuous-ie running down her face then you do need to apply compression to it to attempt to stop it. If in doubt a call to the out of hours Vet is in order

Good luck

It's the skin around her eye, the corner bit (no idea what it's called). It's stopped, or seems to have like it isn't pouring or anything, still a bit damp but I don't know if that's because I was wiping it with water and it's damp because her fur is.

Our vets has its second practice open until 5 on a Sunday, my bf rang up after I'd tried to clean her up a bit but of course it's the useless vet on.. So we don't know whether to wait until after 5 and see/talk to the emergency vet or keep it clean until tomorrow for her appointment.
We need to get her again soon to clean her bum a bit and I think I might cut her back claws down again.
