  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What would you do?

I'm a bit stuck on what to do today, the boys were booked into the vets for today at 6 because I'd noticed some smaller droppings in the enclosure, last night I had a good look into it and all their droppings were fine, there wasn't a single smaller poop in sight!

I'm not sure now whether to put them through the stress of going to the vets if all seems fine. Their tummies are nice and soft. The only reasons they would be going is essentially to give them a look over and then to maybe clip their dew claws (I just couldn't get to them when I clipped their nails before, I could probably try again though)

What would you do? I find it hard sometimes to balance the decision of when they need to go and the stress it would put them through.

I meant to take a photo last night of some small poops that I found. I am fairly certain they are Buster's as he is the only one that feels the need to leave them all over the floor, and I have seen them a few times. I'm taking them to the vets in the coming weeks for a nail clip/vaccinations anyway, so I might mention it/take a couple with me, but I'm not worried about it and probably wouldn't make an appointment especially for that. And that is the case even though my vets it literally a 1 minute drive away (I only don't walk in case I encountered any dogs en route!) so it's not particularly stressful for them. It's completely up to you though, if you think they would benefit from a quick once over I'm sure it wouldn't do them any harm. Aren't buns supposed to have a 6 month check up anyway? Is now about the right time for that? Hope they get on ok whatever you decide.

In all honesty I'm guilty of not taking them for a health check yet, they were checked when they had their neuter not that long ago so I'm probably safe until April when they have their vaccinations.

They generally have a full on check at the pre-neuter appointment so I'm sure they'd be fine until April, but if it would put your mind at rest maybe you should take them. Alternatively could you just discuss with the vet over the phone?

I've just had a talk to the vet over the phone. I told her that I didn't think it was necessary for me to see a vet as they have been fine, are eating, drinking, being themselves its just that I found the odd droppings, but I've had no more of those.

The lady was very nice she just said that its not necessary to bring them in as long as they aren't having trouble eating or drinking or passing droppings. I figured that I'd keep an eye out for the next few days. Although I really do think they are fine now, especially after doing a thorough poo search last night and seeing that they are both passing normal droppings. My concern was that these small droppings were the only droppings of one rabbit, but that's not the case.

I'm going to keep an eye out, now there's just the matter of clipping their dew claws. Have to give it a go later. God help me. :(

Aw bless you, I don't even attempt nails myself. Vet trip every time for my two. Maybe if I wasn't lucky enough to have the vet on my doorstep I'd have to man up and face it, but it's just not worth the stress at home. I can't even get Buster to a point where I can pick him up now, whereas I could previously!

Good call on the poo watch too I reckon. I found 6 strung together last night....!! The joys of bunny-mummyhood eh?!

Definitely. Its lovely when you spend most of your tie examining a rabbit poo! Definitely on poo watch for the minute, going to keep a good eye out, they've never showed and signs of slowing down with eating and things so I'm sure all is well.
