Rabbit SEVERE dental abscess U/D post #35 - Vet results - now possible EC

I found the same with my Dumplin one day fine the next his face wasn't right and he refused a fenugreek Crunchie which wasn't like him at all :(

He had to have a dental and this lump was an abscess :D:evil:

Hard lump that he flinched at when I touched it :(

Hope your vet is rabbit savvy you may need X-rays but defo sounds like my Dumplin :(

You are in for a long hard fight and I wish you luck and special vibes for your bunny

Aww, poor wee soul, it certainly does sound like an abcess or tooth issue. you are doing the right thing by going to the vets as it'll quite painful...

All the very very best of luck and noserubs to little bun

Xxx

I would guess an abscess is most likely if it appeared suddenly. They can often be linked to teeth when they are around the jaw. Everything is quite close together in a bunny head though so I agree I expect they'll need an xray to work it out exactly.

Hello!

I just read a few of your posts regarding Dumplin, I’m so sorry for your loss! He looks like he was well loved and cared for.

When you found out about the abscess what procedures followed? Did the vet X-ray him, how did they know it was related to his teeth and what did the dental involve?

I hope it isn’t too raw to be talked about, I would love to know more as it is a personal experience.

Thanks!

Thank you for your kind words :)

If I had known when it started the stress poor Dump and me would go thru I would have done things differently :?
He had his dental which was done under sedation and also had the abscess flushed to get out all the puss Rabbit puss is like toothpaste but thicker of you have never dealt with it :?
His dental went well to be honest and he came home with anti biotics Septrin and pain meds Lixicom he was on the Septrin for two weeks

The abscess filled up again and split into 2 separate capsules these were lanced under a local which I didn't like but didn't want to put him thru sedation again so soon

We went back weekly for checkups and draining as needed again just under local :(

Changed anti biotics to Baytril which we did think was working but after about 6/7 weeks but then a hard lump came back up on the side the first lump came I found this and went back to the vet next day I carried on for another week had the soft under chin abscess lanced but it filled literally by the time I had got home on the next Wednesday he was quiet but perked up Thursday, Friday he was quiet again and we went to the vets Saturday afternoon to help him to the bridge

He was only just 2

From start to finish it was a 10 week fight and I wish I hadn't put him thru it for so long

When I thought I was winning and the abscess were going soft and draining out I contacted a rabbit specialist to see if X-ray but we didn't get the chance

I Think Dumplin had had enough :(

Have a look at this thread also with tooth root Abcesses and positives :) when it works out

How did you get on at the vet?

I've dealt with more rabbits abscesses than I wish (rescued/ fostered bunnies). Do contact me if it turns out to be an abscess and you'd like any info .. My latest one was within the last year, and touch wood it hasn't recurred :D

Have you tried softening the pellets with water? Sometimes they are just a bit hard when they have a sore mouth.

Readigrass is usually considered quite tasty and is slightly higher calorie than standard hay. You could also try fresh grass from your lawn (if you've got one) as that maybe easier to eat.

Hopefully now he's eaten the pellets he'll poop soon, I'd recommend cleaning the tray out so it's easy to count :)

Fibreplex might be worth a go, it's fibre in a tube (comes out like thick paste) with probiotics etc. too so good for when they aren't eating as much.

Aww, glad he coped ok with the op. If he's still drowsy it might just be he'll eat when he wakes up. Just offer loads of different foods to pick from and see what he'll eat. It might be he'll have a little of one thing and then want something else. If you've got porridge oats, mixing those with a little water to make a mash can be a favourite.

If he's had a general anasthetic he's probably a bit groggy from that and stressed at the trip to the vet

Personally I would make sure he's got food and water around him including some of his favourites and make sure he's somewhere warmish and comfortable - as they struggle to regulate heat properly after a GA

And then take him back to the vet if he's not eaten anything by tomorrow morning.

Some people would syringe feed critical care or recovery food but if I were him I would just want to be left alone, so unless you're super confident about syringe feeding or he's very used to it,I'd just keep and eye on him and let him rest/chill out

Hope he's feeling better soon x

My Ellie has a very similar problem to your bunny. She had a huge abscess removed about a year ago and since then it has returned and has had to be drained twice, the last time just two days ago. Her abscess is entirely related to her teeth and the bone in her jaw and I'm starting to think it will never go completely. If you want to talk to me just PM me and I can discuss it with you. I'm a bit tired at the moment as I'm just finishing a night shift so I'm going to bed now. :)
