  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Corynebacterium

tobyjones

Young Bun
My bun was diagnosed with Corynebacterium nearly two months ago through a nasal swap and chest x ray and has been on Baytril since. His symptoms were heavy breathing, but no discharge.

The baytril was certainly helping, although not clearing the symptoms 100%. However, within the last week his breathing has gone backwards.
He had been on Duplocillin before the chest x ray and swap, which helped to a point, but he went backwards with that too.

My Vet (along with another rabbit Vet) is trying to find a bronchodilator that is suitable for rabbits to try and open up his airways.

Does anyone know/or has used a bronchodilator? And does anyone have any experience with corynebacterium because I can’t find anything about it online.
Thank you
Toby

The only dilator I've used is bisolvon, not sure if it's rabbit suitable though. Your vet could probably contact William Lewis in Brentwood, or some of the other exotics specialist vets (Mark??) for advice.. Hopefully someone will be along with the other names :)

I have no experience with that specific bacteria - but my vet has used (and given for use at home) both ventolin and also flixotide for longer term management -
(a dilator)
to be taken via a cat inhaler system.

Bisolven (above) is not, as I understand it, a dilator as such, it causes mucus to become more fluid and thus easier to evacuate.

Ah yes you're right about bislovan - so not awake today! I've also used f10 to nebuliser, but they need to be pretty chilled.
