Introducing Bubbles and Fudge

Hayley34

New Kit
Hi I'm pretty new to keeping bunnies I've always been a cat lady anyway one day I was overcome with an urge for a bunny so we got Bubbles,, he's a 19 weeks old lop eared bunny and we have had him neutered then I decided he needed a friend so we got Fudge who is a gorgeous 11 week old female lop eared bunny, they are my absolute babies and I love them so much <3

They're not together at the moment they have a tier each on a 2 tier cage as when we let them out together he still tries to mount her so we're letting them out one at a time for a few hours each but when bubbles is out playing he goes to the hutch and they spend a lot of time sniffing and socialising through the bars of the cage, my intention is to eventually let them have full run of the hutch together and to let them out to run around the front room all day and evening together, they are both litter trained and love their front room playing time. I would love to post some pictures but I'm not quite sure how to do it as it says I can't post attachments :-/

and this is Fudge or fudgypops as we call her

Aw bless, they are gorgeous. I started a photobucket account to be able to upload pics to the forum. It's quite easy and there is a sticky in the "help using the forum" section.

It's quite important that you don't put them together until at least 6 weeks after he was neutered because he may still be fertile. Are you planning to get her spayed as well? It will be much easier to bond them if she is spayed as her hormones might cause problems otherwise. There are also huge health advantages for females as 80% of unspayed females will develop uterine cancer by the age of 5.

You'll find loads of good advice on here if you need help when you come to bond them etc or if you have any other questions xx

Hi :) yes I'm definitely getting her neutered as I'd read about the cancer and it really worried me I did ask the vet when I got Bubbles done but as she was such a tiny little rabbit the vet advised I gave it a month or 2 to let her get a little bigger

I think they like them to be over 1kg for the anaesthetic. Hope her op goes well and that you manage to bond them :)

I'm so worried about having her done as my vet said a lot of bunnies don't react well to anaesthetic it just makes me nervous, saying that Bubbles was fine when I had him done but. I know for a girlie bunny its a much bigger op :(

It is a bigger op but I'm sure she'll be fine. I was really nervous when I had my girl done, and she to stay in over night as she wasn't really eating, but after a couple of quiet days she was back to being her usual self. Just make sure the get sends her home with pain relief, and also gives you some gut stimulant if she needs it.

Fudgypops has been booked in for being spayed next Wednesday :-/ last night we had her on the sofa and Bubbles was on the floor and normally she a docile quiet bunny who won't even jump off the sofa but yesterday she jumped off the sofa and just went for him all I could see was 1 big bundle of fluff where they were fighting and I just had to stick my hands in and grab one as I couldn't see which was which, it happened to be Bubbles that I picked up and he was terrified of her poor fella then today she went for him through the bars of the cage and when my partner went to move her she bit him soooo the time has come I think for her to be done then hopefully we will have no more incidents like this :(

Wow, I'm surprised the vet is prepared to do her so young. I don't know what age other have had their girlies spayed but I thought the general age was 4 to 6 months. Hope she gets on ok. May be best to keep them completely separate between now and when she has completely recovered and you can try bonding them. Keep us posted.

You can do it from Facebook too by right-clicking on the images when you've opened them (i.e. they are fullsize, not thumbnails), clicking on 'copy image location' and pasting it in between the

I just found this from the page linked below:

Richard Saunders MRCVS, RWA/F Resident in Rabbit & Zoo Medicine, at Bristol University Langford Referrals, says that as a general guideline, males can be castrated when their testicles have descended, from about 12 weeks of age. Females can be spayed safely from 16 weeks of age, so long as they are in good health and weigh at least 1 kg.
