It's myxi - again :( UPDATE 2nd nov

fluffiebunnie

Warren Veteran
Pickle died last week of myxi, my second bunny to die of this awful disease. All my rabbits are vaccinated.

Today I took Pootle (Pickle's mate) in for her myxi jab, only to discover she also had myxi....

Three bunnies all ill with myxi when they have been vaccinated. I questioned Mark the vet who is also having serious issues with other pet rabbits with myxi. He is in talks with the company who makes the vaccination as he believes it is not working. I suspected it didn't work the first time round two years ago when I lost Twinkle, and now I have lost Pickle and also Pootle maybe...

I don't want to alarm anybody, but Mark is thinking perhaps twice yearly vaccinations with this new combination jab might help, as otherwise he is thinking it is not working too.

I have left Pootle with Mark, asking him to do all he can for her...:(

I'm so sorry for your loss, this is a real worry then.

What vets do you go to since you're in Kent. I got to a specialist called Mark at Trinity in Maidstone and just wondered if it was him.

I'm so sorry to see this :(
My condolences on the loss of Pickle
Healing and recovery vibes winging their way to you for Pootle. xxxxxxx

I am so sorry  how awful to go through, could you maybe get in touch with someone from the RWAF and your vet, to question the effectiveness of the new vaccine, so sorry your having to go through it all again

Oh I'm so very sorry to hear this :( I do hope that Pootle can be helped.

My Beatrice came down with one solitary myxo nodule, two weeks before the end of the 12 months (the booster was booked when she came down with it) - so for her, while she did get something, the vaccine clearly still worked right at the end of that period. I wonder if there are regional genetic changes going on, meaning that it's not working as well for some regional strains than others?

I just don't think the vaccine works. It cant if three bunnies have all got it with the vaccine being given. Both Twinkle and Pickle looked like they had full blown myxi, whereas Pootle looks more nodular at the moment but it could be that we have caught it early.

Let's hope you caught it early and Mark can do something to help. What is the treatment? I have no idea thankfully.

Yes it doesn't seem to work. I wonder if it's the combined one that doesn't work or when there were singular ones for myxi and VHD it did then. Be interesting to see if anyone goes back to the singular ones or if the vaccine has never worked. I've always thought it was like the flu jab you can still get it but to a lesser extent so gives the rabbit a good chance, whereas what has happened with you, seems to have made no difference to your bunnies.

Has Mark had a lot of other cases I wonder or maybe it was a duff batch. I hate to think it doesn't work at all especially after the thread about panacur not working. Seems we don't have a lot to protect our bunnies.

It cant be a bad batch as they were all vaccinated at different times - Mark is concerned enough to be in talks with the manufacturers. He is dealing with a lot of myxi bunnies at the moment he said.

It does sound like it's not that effective or you have been extremely unlucky.

I really hope Pootle gets well. Thank you for letting everyone know about the vaccine, maybe twice a year will now be recommended.

Sending vibes for Pootle. Keep us updated..I, too, would like to know more about this. I think this year has been particularly bad for myxi. :(
