  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC- Fenbendazole( Panacur etc) Resistance

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
My Vet has just been speaking with an Exotics Specialist. Whilst discussing the use of Panacur the Specialist said that he has recently seen documented evidence that Fenbendazole is no longer effective in treating EC. He told my Vet that at this moment in time there is 'no effective treatment to eradicate EC' and that treatment is of the symptoms that the individual Rabbit presents with.

I dont know the source of this evidence, but I assume it will become more widely known in the not too distant future.

I can't remember who it was, but someone on here said that their vet doesn't use it because it isn't effective against EC.

It never has been a full and effective treatment, so I'm not really surprised if it is no longer seen as effective.

I wonder what trinity do now when they get a case of ec. I guess a lot of vets will still think it works but since they don't i wonder what course of action they would recommend. Im hoping i will never have to find out and i know they always take doughnut in when she is unwell and will only return her when she is back to normal.

Just be interesting to know to help others.

That is a staggering thought. :( But not too surprising as plenty of pathogens are rapidly becoming resistant due to medicinal overuse.
I wonder if this is why Mimzy has never really recovered either his balance or his proper head position even though I got him to the vet and within half an hour of symptomatic onset with the full spectrum of treatment including 28 days of panacur (I'd wanted to go longer but the vet said no.) I was under the impression that quick action usually brought about a full recovery but to this day he is not "right." I am of course grateful that he is still alive two and a half years on but I admit some envy when I see other head tilt bunnies that are "back to normal."

Thankfully I've never encountered EC, and I hope I never will, as a this is very bad news for rabbits with EC

The vet I am seeing with Sweetie ( although she isn't being treated for that) has a special interest in EC, so I will ask her about it at my appointment next week. Very worrying if it's the case. :(
