  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vaccinations

Young Bun
I have just found out that despite my rabbit being housed indoors with no access to an outdoors area, he still needs vaccinations. I had no idea and will call the vet tomorrow but I thought you all would be knowledgeable.

He is now six. Is he too old to have the jabs? I know people are going to think me irresponsible not doing this earlier but I really did not realise he was at risk. Thank you for reading.

Hi, yes he will need vaccinations as myxamatosis and vhd are spread by biting insects and obviously they will come into the house via open doors/windows, so your bunny will be at risk, its ok for him to be vaccinated as long as he is fit and healthy, your vet should give him a thorough health check before vaccinating. Well done for getting him done, its well worth it:wave:

Don't worry, it's one of those things that make sense once you know, but is a very common misconception. I guess in the UK we tend to think of diseases as being something you catch off other people outside, not from insects that sneak in our homes.

It's fine to give first vaccinations at any age as long as your bunny is healthy (the vet will give him a quick check up before the jab). A lot of rescue buns have jabs and neutering etc. later in life too.

Thank you very much. I will call tomorrow.
