How Many is 'Too Many' ?

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
Rabbits ?

Obviously we will all have different limits, but since having far fewer Rabbits I have come to realise that my limit is the number I now have-13. At one time I had 43 which, with hindsight, was far, far too many. I can now see that whilst all 43 were given 'good enough' care I would be lying if I said that they had 'the best'. There were simply not enough hours in the day for me to look after 43 Rabbits to the standard of care I am now able to give 13 Rabbits. In a way I wish I had realised all this years ago. That's not to say that I regret having any of my past Rabbits, but I do regret that had I not been blinded to how many was 'too many' they would all have had 'the best' rather than 'good enough'.

So, how many Rabbits do you feel are your limit to enable you to give them 'the best' ?

43 :shock::shock:

At the moment due to space my limit is 4 so that they can have enough room.

I'm not sure what my limit would be when I eventually get round to moving - but I think 10 would probably be my limit so I could ensure they all had great care, lots of space, and attention etc.

Eta - not that I plan on getting another 7 when I have more space

One pair! I love my two but they're hard work. I'd be terrified with loads of rabbits, I'd be on stasis watch constantly!

in reality, taking into consideration space, my health, money etc... my limit rabbit wise is probably the two pairs i have now. I do love the idea of having a boy bunny in with my two outdoor girls but since they were a trio before(sisters mind) i dont think it would be a good idea, especially as they are now settled with eachother. its more that i love the IDEA but i know its not realistic or for the benefit of the buns, more for myself, so id never do it.

i already struggle to spend time with the outdoor pair as access is a pain(quite literally) with their setup with bending ect...

I've decided (or it has been decided by OH) that I have to stick at 5. The quad are outdoor and Boots is indoor. I dare say I could cope with more, but we have the other animals too :- 2 dogs (outdoor) 1 cat indoor/outdoor, 2 goats (definitely outdoor ) one remaining geriatric gerbil who belongs to my daughter, and one bearded dragon who allegedly belongs to my son, but who more often than not falls into my care :love:

But is what we can offer only ever 'good enough' because it can never be perfect or what they 'should' have?

I've got 14, but my numbers will be decreasing. Ideally I'd like just one group/pair/single who can roam the house- that would be 'the best' I could offer. But my 14 have a much better quality of life than the bulk of rabbits around.

Financially though, they are too much for me, but within a year, I'm sure my numbers will be drastically less, sadly.

2 whilst I'm working full time as otherwise they'd only get half the attention
When I retire.... Maybe a foster pair and a permanent pair

My absolute limit is 2 !!!!

I have pretty high standards when it comes to my pets and if I decide to take them on I give it my all. If I took on more than two I would inevitably lower the standard of care for the original two.

My absolute limit would be four. However, right now in a worst case scenario situation such as both of them going in for expensive veterinary procedures (I like to be prepared!) I would only have enough money for two. I have all the love in the world to give, but unfortunately not all that much cash

Zig & Florence are all I need

I'd also like to add that I have so much respect for people who foster/ work in rescues

Two! I honestly don't think I could manage more than that. Rabbits take a lot of time and money and I love spoiling my boys. :D

I currently have 4 - one pair and two singles. If they were two pairs, then that would be fine for me. As it stands, the two singles really don't get enough attention, and I am struggling financially. But all of them have tons of space, which is great. Realistically I think one pair is my limit.

Two is the limit for me with me working full time. If I won the lottery and could give up work I'd buy a house with land and build a giant purpose built bunny barn. I'd rescue rabbits or provide amazing bunny boarding facilities and would like to imagine I could cope with 6 pairs. After that I'd have to employ someone to help. That's my bunny dream anyhow. I'd do it for love not money.

The 8 we have are probably 2 too many so for us 4 or 6 really.
All 8 have a good life and we spend all our spare time with them but we are lucky so far that we've had no major illnesses. ..touch wood.

That's the other thing, coping with numerous ill Rabbits all at the same time. I guess I was fortunate in that the worst scenario I had were 4 'not eating' Rabbits all at one time. So that meant not only keeping on top of the basic day to day care of every Rabbit, but also syringe feeding, medicating and generally observing the ill ones. Thinking about it I could have gotten into a horrible 'not coping' mess.

One group would be the limit for me and as I think I'll only ever have house rabbits again I think 4 absolute maximum in that group. Then depending on finances and the amount of indoor room I can provide in whatever house I'm in will decide whether that group is of 2, 3 or 4 rabbits.

I couldn't have more than 2 sets as I'd have horrible guilt feelings if I felt like I spent more time with one set than the other! Plus it's double the space for accommodation, and double the time not just socialising but also cleaning!

Four was too many for me, I think three would be fine if they all had good litter habits, as it is I find three sometimes overwhelming as Nutmeg is, well, high-maintainence is probably the most apt description.
