  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Has anyone heard of this

One of my rabbits has been diagnosed with Nasal Fungal Disease. Has anyone heard of this or have a rabbit with this? Does anyone know what treatment should be used? My vet isn't sure so is currently contacting a vet in London to find out what treatment to use. Sorry to post and run but I'm at work, I will be back on tonight. Thanks.

The vet didn't call it ringworm All he said was that it was a spore that could be picked up from hay & that its difficult to treat in dogs & cats & none of his medical books say how to treat a bun. The expert from the royal veterinary college is unavailable now until Mon.
Sorry for missing the link off other post, we had a very sick cat & were trying to decide if the time had come to do the kindest yet hardest thing.

Is it something like aspergillosis?
After a quick google this is the only thing I could find about treatment in rabbits. It looks like it might be quite unusual. In this study they used a drug called Ravuconazole.
Good luck to you and your bun with the new vet on Monday.

How do the symptoms present ?

Could it actually be Vent disease as this often presents in the nose as well as the genitals?

Do you have a picture of your rabbits nose?

It's difficult to 'picture' as it were, but it might be that nebulising with F10 solution might be effective, probably in conjunction with something else but depending on the problem, it might work on its own. I have vague recollections that it has anti-fungal properties after 20 minutes contact time, so maybe 25-30 minutes nebulising a couple of times a day might help?

Hopefully your vet can get in contact with a specialist very soon to discuss appropriate treatment options.

I know rabbits can get fungal infections in their nasal cavities, but I have never seen it and unsure of the treatment, sorry.
I go to the RVC and the vets there are very good and will hopefully be able to sort your bun out :thumb:

Hi everyone & thanks for the replies. Sorry I haven't been on to answer any queries or even to respond, it's been a difficult time dealing with the death of Dylan my beloved cat of 17 years.
Bonbon's problem started with the occasional sneezing but eventually getting quite vicious so the obvious conclusion was snuffles. The vet gave him Baytril but that didn't seem to be helping so put him on Marbocyl. Again not much difference
Bonbon was castrated last Wed & as he would be sedated I had the vet take a sample from his nose (I'd already had a rabbit (Pipkin) who spent nearly a year on the wrong medication for her snuffles & didn't want to go down that route again) & the culture came back with Nasal Fungal Disease. Vet believes the snuffles is secondary to NFD
Bonbon's nose looks normal it's just wet & otherwise he's behaving just like any other young bunny. He's a real sweetie.
The expert from the RVC is back at work today so hopefully she will be able help him.
I will post any results.

Bluebell's culture showed aspergillosis but the concencous from the vet team was that it was more likely that the sample had been contaminated.
