  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice please

Advice please took mylo in to be neutered last wednesday when my mum collected him the nurse said they had to wash him down cause he had been bleeding from 1 of his testicles it settled down and when he went back on the friday it was found that he was still bleeding a little bit and had a blood clot in the testicle the vet advised to bathe it 2/3 times a day and if i was still worried to take him back so i have been checking it and noticed it was slightly harder than the other testicle so took him back and he has some infection in it he has been given baytril for 5 days, Now when i took him in to be neutered i had a bit of a bad feeling about the vet who i've not seen before but brushed it aside and thought he will be fine its a simple op now i feel really bad and guilty but i've also now got to pay for his medication which i don't mind paying for but i don't think i should have to pay due to me believing it was down to the vet that this has happened i've had 4 neuters and 1 spay done in the last 6 weeks and none of them had any problems. What do you guys think?

I think you could have a word with the vet or practice manager about it. I agree it's very bad luck this happened, but unfortunately there are no guarantees with rabbit surgery as you know, that it will always run to plan. I have known bucks die under anaesthesia just for neutering but it's not common.

Could you find yourself another vet or make sure you only see the vet in the practice who you trust?

If his testicle has haematoma (swelling with blood), as well as antibiotics I have found arnica tablets very helpful.
