The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Can a rabbit be fed Bio Lapis long-term?

Hi

I've been giving Gerry, my new rabbit, Bio Lapis for over 2 weeks now on veterinary advice. He didn't used to eat his caecotrophs and never had since we got him a few months ago. Over the past week, he's eating them every day (apart from one day when he didn't get his digestive supplements) which shows his digestion is sensitive to change and his gut bacteria are in a fine balance.

With that in mind, would it be ok to give him Bio Lapis daily long-term, and potentially the rest of his life?

Personally, I don't see why not. I feed Profibre pellets everyday, which contain probiotics in an easier-to-feed way.

But I would check with your vet, just in case this may create a reliance on them, which may not be a good idea.

I wouldn't think there would be a problem with it. However I would think that after a couple of weeks on it then possibly the gut flora would be stabilised and could be ok without?

UPDATE: I tried giving Gerry bio lapis every other day, as advised by my vet. On those days when he doesn't receive the bio lapis, he leaves 3-4 caecotrophs. On the days when he does have bio lapis, he usually eats them all, and sometimes only leaves one caecotroph which I think is due to being distracted and forgetting about it.

It looks like he needs bio lapis every day, possibly for the rest of his life. I'm going to ask my vet about it and maybe try Pro fibre pellets instead as its easier to give to him.
