Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

UTI - How long on abx?

I have posted here concerning my bunny & his tummy problems. We were at the vets the same day, Pitsi was x-rayed & we took some urine. She also tried to take some blood sample, but Pitsi was overly stressed, so she stopped.
The X-Rays were fine, but the urine sample showed UTI. The creatinine levels were ok, so his kidney is functioning well. Our vet prescribed a broad spectrum antibiotic, so that we didn't have to wait all the weekend for the urine test ( she gives the samples to a microbiologist & he is not available during weekends) & Metacam.

So, Pitsi is now treated with Sivotine (chloortetracycline 50gr/kg) 1.25ml in 125ml water every day, when he drinks it I refill the bowl with plain water
Metacam (for cats) 0.2 once a day
Pro-enteric paste 1ml every night
I also offer plenty of dandellion, some parsley & a cucumber peel to help with urination.
He is not straining, urinated 4-5 times every day, but the urine was darker the first days, now is much better.

Tomorrow he will be 10 days on abx, the vet suggested to stop it, wait for 4 days & have a urinanalysis again.

Has anyone experienced the same problem? How long was your bunny on medication & what was used??

at least 10days i would say. sometimes weeks if needed. i don't know what the medication is to add to water, but unless they drink all the water, they won't be getting all the meds they need. it's not a great way to give meds really. the other thing is that the metacam dose is very low. probably too low to make any difference really i would think. especially being cat metacam aswell.

Fortunatelly, he drinks all the water till afternoon.
What is a typical metacam dose?? My bunny weights 1.180gr & the vet told me to use the syringe provided with metacam as I would with a cat. Wouldn't it mean that I'm offering a dose for a 2kg cat? I offered 0.2 instead of 0.12 because 0.2 is the min on the syringe & I've read that bunnies metabolise it differently & faster from other animals, so they need more.
Thanks for your reply!
